Yes, if they suspect or can show that you are bringing in over 500 dollars worth of goods. If it's electronics etc It's very hard to get away with. Things like clothes or jewelry, makeup etc,if you can pass them off as your own, easier to get away with.

P.S. I'm in no way suggesting that you should attempt to defraud by lying to customs.

CBP can xray bags on flights from certain destinations. Anyone's guess on what catches their (dogs') eyes.

OP is asking about Jamaican port not US. They will most likely search the bag manually as there is only one scanner (in kgn) and if she has multiple bags she will be manually searched for sure.
