Fake news delivers real gunman to pizzeria caught up in alt-right conspiracy theory

consequences of a made-up conspiracy theory swirling around a popular D.C. pizzeria became all too real when a gunman walked into the venue Sunday afternoon.

During the presidential campaign, some elements of the alt-right began fueling the conspiracy that Comet Ping Pong was in fact the site of a pedophilia ring used by high-ranking members of the Democratic Party, deeming that supposed conspiracy Pizzagate.

The D.C. Police Department arrested 28-year-old Edgar Maddison Welch of Salisbury, North Carolina, outside the kid-friendly pizza and music venue. Witnesses say that Welch went through the restaurant carrying the gun and tried to enter a staff area in the back of the building. He reportedly fired multiple shots inside, though no one was injured. He reportedly told the police that hed come to self-investigate Pizza Gate, which the department noted is a fictitious online conspiracy theory.

traditional news outlets have reported on Pizzagate, supporters of the wild theories have argued that attention from the mainstream is only proof that media is in on the coverup.

The hashtag #Pizzagate filled Twitter with users doubting the coverage of Welchs activities at Comet Ping Pong, including media denials of Pizzagates validity.

One notable conspiracy theorist is Michael Flynn Jr., son of incoming national security adviser and retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. The elder Flynn has previously shown support to other conspiracy theories that Clinton is tied up with alleged money laundering and sex crimes unrelated to Comet Ping Pong.

On Sunday the younger Flynn tweeted he was skeptical of reports that Pizzagate wasnt real.

The tweet included another tweet from Citizens For Trump special projects director Jack Posobiec alleging Washington D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham found no connection between Welch and Pizzagate.

We could find no evidence that Newsham said that, only that he initially told the Post the incident was likely not "terrorist related."

According to the official press release from D.C. police, Welch himself admitted he was there because of the conspiracy theory: "During a post arrest interview this evening, the suspect revealed that he came to the establishment to self-investigate Pizza Gate. "

This you have to put down to a rather unstable individual and not necessarily down to any political leanings obviously.

The fact you have anyone not just those in office tweeting stories like these as if they are real just beggars belief! To me you are just as culpable if something had gone very wrong at that pizzarrea as you are enciting others to take stupid actions. Hide behind your screens and say "I didn't tell him to go there did I" doesn't wash as the very fact you give credence to it makes others think there is something more to it.

Child abuse of any form is not a subject matter to be ridiculed and subjected to such dumbing down. Many will have seen the story for what it was, a ridiculous concoction with no basis of truth. However you can never rule out the lunatics who may believe as gospel what others write.

Get these officials off twitter and get them doing the jobs they are meant to.... idiots.
