Went to India on vacation for 4 weeks and returned to the US yesterday. I had no issue entering the US with an expired GC and an extension letter.

Port of Entry: Chicago.

CBP officer asked me the following questions:

1) What was the purpose of travel?

2) Was there any issue in getting your conditional Green Card?

3) When did you get your GC?

4) When did you file petition to remove conditions on residence?

5) Are you still married to the same person?

Were you able to use the Kiosk machine at the airport?

No, I was not able to use Kiosk at the airport. When I placed my expired GC on machine reader, it displayed a message on screen to consult a CBP officer. I then approached an agent monitoring activities on kiosks who then pointed out to a queue to meet CBP officer.

Immigration Journey

  • On L-1B visa for about 1.5 years before getting my F1 visa.
  • F1 (2 years) to OPT (6 months) to H-1B (8 years; Had an approved I-140 and extended my H-1B beyond 6 years) to Conditional GC (3 years 3 months) to Permanent GC.
  • I had earned 40 credits in Social Security, submitted I-864W when filing for I-130.
  • Husband and I are both Indians by birth. Husband became a naturalized USC in July 2014 and I applied for AOS in August 2014.

Thank you for sharing the experience. I also feel a bit hesitant going out of the country without a physical card in hand, and have been debating if I really need a stamp on my passport. Hope everything will be fine with just the extension letter :)

Just to be clear, you need the card AND the extension letter, not just the extension letter. If you've lost your card or something you'll need the stamp (I don't think they'll provide a replacement for a lost conditional card once you're in process for a 10-year card.)

Is your timeline updated?

Oh yes, I forgot to mention about bringing the expired card :) Thank you for correcting me on that.

Just to add to the experiences of traveling with the extension letter, my wife went back home last month for four weeks and upon her return to the US she had no issues with the expired GC and extension letter at the Detroit Metro Airport POE other than she wasn't able to use the kiosk.  She also had no issues checking into her flight to the US in Beijing (Delta).  We are planning another trip in July as well.

Thank you guys for sharing your travel experiences! I'm still a little nervous because of recent immigration changes and my friends are only making it worse by sending scary links saying the CBP are much tougher than it used to be and even citizens running into excessive questioning etc.  That's a great news to read some positive feedback

Hi, I am also planing to travel to India in some time. Which airport did you come from? Mumbai/Delhi?

They check the documents in India too. Was there no issue with expired Green Card and Extension Letter from Indian authorities? Were they aware of this extension letter purpose?

I have also traveled a couple of times with the expired green card and extension letter. I have Global Entry, so I used that lane (without going through the kiosk, as others have mentioned), and in both instances, I was out within minutes.

Questions:

Do you still live at the same residential address?

What do you do for a living?

F-1 Visa: Academic years 2007/2010.

K-1 Visa: I-129F sent Aug 2013; Approved Jan 2014.

Green Card: AOS sent Feb 2014; Approved Jan 2015.

Removal of Conditions: I-751 sent Nov 2016; Approved Apr 2018.

US Citizenship: Application sent Nov 2017; Fingerprints Nov 2017; Civics/English exam March 2018; Oath May 2018.

USCIS has a new resisigned green card and EAD that will start issuing starting May 1st. This is said to be the next generation one to make fraud extremely difficult. A few changes include enhanced graphics, no signature as well as no optical stripe behind the card.
