More than likely my husband will have his K-1 visa in not too long. Is there a problem for him not being able to speak English when he arrives at POE? He speaks bits and pieces but I'm highly doubtful he'll be able to answer anything customs asks him. What to do ?

Does he speak any Spanish? More than possible they'd have someone at POE who can speak Spanish..

Otherwise he could learn the phrases he needs to explain he has the K1 visa, and also the phrases to say he speak little English and they'd go from there

July 19th - flying to US!

I think that a husband using a K-1 is going to have a problem. Make sure he's got a R/T ticket.

You could teach him the rest of the info he needs to know at the POE.

Ahh.. yeah.. I have to get used to not referring to him as my husband. We are both muslim and have undergone our Islamic wedding, so, according to our religion we are married.. Getting married on paper is a different thing. According to the US he is my fiancé.

Yeah, I'm aware of your situation, but brought it up for a reason. You both should be extremely careful about that (be sure to check any evidence you submit for accuracy). It has been a problem for others in the past & hate to see someone trip up when they don't need to.

Read a few POE reports; he'll be asked for his US address, reminded about the 90 day 'get married' clause and potentially do a fingerprint/autograph (we entered with a different visa, so read K-1 stories). I'm sure your fiance will feel more confident traveling if he knows what's coming and a few get-around phrases.

My favorite one is "double tall non-fat latte please". :) $20 bucks or so in his pocket will be nice as well, for snacks or whatever.

If I survived Tokyo on a smile, I'm sure he'll do well, too.

PS: usually the interview is in English or one of the local languages. You can do some searching, but I'll bet they can do the interview in French.

French is a major world language... I'm sure he won't have any problems - if they need to talk to him they should be able to round up a french-speaking interpreter fairly easily.

Maybe he could have a note with him stating what languages he does speak and also with information on it that you might think they would want to know.

You could of course telephone the POE and ASK them about language problems etc. Most have very helpful info desks; find out if they have translators around working the time of day he will be arriving. You needn't give them all your personal info - just that you have a friend flying in who speaks only French and Arabic and want to make sure he has as smooth a time as possible, and that it won't cause THEM (the POE people) any problems either.

I agree with denali - have him write (or you can do it for him) all his info and the K1 related stuff also. So they can read it and use it. My father who used to travel extensively (Europe, US and Asia) couldn't understand various accents (including US people's) and he used to carry notes and give it to them if they asked. He used the notes also for finding his flights/gates etc. etc. Good Luck

Yup all the major POE's have translators on hand. I know when i've travelled through Atlanta i've heard requests for French. Japanese, Spanish, Italian and just about any language you care to mention. I'm sure they'll be able to accomodate your fiance :D
