I never really got on board with the "antibacterial soap" craze. Now I am glad I never did. Never has been any evidence that they worked any better than regular soap and water. http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm378393.htm

"The FDA recently issued a rule banning triclosan and more than a dozen other chemicals commonly used in antibacterial soaps.

This will affect a large number of products. If the product makes antibacterial claims, chances are pretty good that it contains one of these ingredients, according to an FDA spokeswoman. Companies have a year to comply with the new rule.

Triclosan is the trade name for 5-Chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenol. Its manufactured from the same raw material as 2,4-D, a component of the infamous Vietnam-era defoliant, Agent Orange."

Here is a list of the newly banned chemicals:

Cloflucarban

Fluorosalan

Hexachlorophene

Hexylresorcinol

Iodine complex (ammonium ether sulfate and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate)

Iodine complex (phosphate ester of alkylaryloxy polyethylene glycol)

Nonylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanoliodine

Poloxamer-iodine complex

Povidone-iodine 5 to 10 percent

Undecoylium chloride iodine complex

Methylbenzethonium chloride

Phenol (greater than 1.5 percent)

Phenol (less than 1.5 percent) 16

Secondary amyltricresols

Sodium oxychlorosene

Tribromsalan

Triclocarban

Triclosan

Show me where I have said that? There are areas where the government has no business, but sometimes it is a good thing. When it comes to improving the general health of "we the people", I am all for it.

Ahem. I'm sure you meant to say "Triclosan is in Colgate too". It's not in mine.

Yeah I wasn't trying to say it's in all toothpastes. I forgot which brand(s) had it. I always look if I'm not familiar. I've also seen it in mouthwash. Probably Colgate brand too.

I think it's a symptom of a bigger issue. A lot of these chemicals weren't tested well to begin with. Unfortunately consumers were unwitting test subjects for some of these chemicals, and now are paying the price.

I looked after I read your post. Google says Colgate is the only toothpaste with it. Find that hard to believe, but did not delve.

I agree. Too many chemicals that we cannot pronounce nor understand. I was surprised to find Triclosan was linked to agent orange. Then again, fluoride is pretty bad juju itself. Hence the warning to never swallow your toothpaste.

This is probably the scariest part of it:

  • Triclocarban has been shown to amplify or unbalance artificially the effects of sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, and may be carcinogenic. It can also cause muscle damage.
  • Furthermore, laboratory studies suggest that triclosan and triclocarban may be contributing to antibiotic resistance in bacteria known to cause human infections. Infections caused by bacteria with resistance to at least one antibiotic have been estimated to kill more than 60,000 hospitalized patients each year.

Antibiotic resistance is already becoming a major issue because everybody thinks it is such a harmless cute little solution for everything, and it is not. It should not be taken as often as it is nor should we be consuming products(dairy, meat) that contain antibiotics. The use itself also has alot more side effects than people realize.

This database keeps a fairly exhaustive list of products it's in. https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/browse.php?containing=706623&&showmore=products&start=0 I basically use sensodyne products now and have for a while. One of the most concerning things for women with Triclosan is it's effects on the endocrine system.
