Can someone use your green card if he steals it from you

Thanks! So basically one who finds a green card can file a form to abandon the residency of the person who lost it?

Technically, yes. But your risk is no higher than the risk of any native USC having their identity stolen and ending up in prison for life or with a death sentence. It's all technically possible. The worst case scenario is always extreme suffering, no matter what your current circumstances are. So no need to obsess about it. Just because something is possible that doesn't mean that there is a reasonable chance of it happening.

I would disagree according to the USCIS website: https://www.uscis.gov/green-card/after-green-card-granted

This ^^^^^ (Its all the rage)

However I do agree the social security card should be kept in a safe place and not carried about your person.

Neither should it be laminated. For such an important document it's surprising to see that it is printed on a flimsy but of paper!

Your green card is like gold and should not be carried on your person.

Federal law requires you to carry your green card on your person at all times.

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The same theory applies for everything that's exposed to the public, whether it's a credit card, house key etc

Yes. But if you leave your GC at home there's even a greater chance of you getting charged with a misdemeanor level offense, which will not help you when you're applying for naturalization. Or, someone can break into your home and find your GC only to abuse it. Or, ...

Please don't take this the wrong way but you may want to seek anxiety counselling. Worrying about *extremely* unlikely worst-case-scenarios is unhealthy and you may need help dealing with it. Hell, we all do.

I actually lost my green card for about half an hour earlier.

I was out riding with a police officer on patrol, and noticed my small bag that I carry which contains my phone and ID wasn't in the car anymore. I started shitting bricks, and asked the officer to return to the one place I had gotten out at, and lo and behold there is my bag laying in the road.

That was a shitty thirty minutes. But it's still the law to carry it, and so I do.

Oh boy I would totally disagree with this. Your green card is like gold and should not be carried on your person. Neither should you carry your social security card. Keep them at home in a secure place or even in your bank safe deposit box. You don't want to lose either card. You are nopt required to carry your green card with you at all time.

If someone steals it, what do you expect them to do with it?


What are the chances the person stealing it looks JUST like the picture of YOU on the GC?

You're worried about people stealing it, it's something that you can replace fairly easily, I'm more so curious on what you think a person who stole it, could do with it, when it has a picture of YOU plastered on it? Are they going to paste their pic over it and use it as a form of ID? Are they going to commit crimes and have your green card on them? If the latter happens, hopefully you would have already put in for a replacement and a police report, showing you clearly don't have the card, absolving you of ANYTHING the person did.

If they can break into your house, they can steal EVERYTHING used to identify you. If they steal your wallet, now they have credit cards, driver's license, Green card, etc. People who are out to do these things TARGET people, they don't just do it all willy nilly.

That and if things like the above happen, then you're clearly being targeted and you should worry more about why you're being targeted than what can happen with any form of ID that they steal.

I agree that you seem to have some form of anxiety, not that any of us here are doctors, but I don't think "Getting GC stolen and used for criminal activity" has ever been on 99% of VJ's mind.




Again, what do you think a thief would do with your Green card? If you think that they're going to use it to hurt your immigration status, then you either have enemies or you're over thinking. -Why- would someone purposely hurt YOUR immigration status? People don't steal these things without a purpose, if it's for identity theft, the easiest way around that is simply filing a police report when it's lost and getting a new one.

If anyone uses any of the info they pull of your Instagram, it's as simple as going "hey look, I have the physical card, and I'm the person in this picture".


Good luck, and try to calm down. Having this kind of paranoia as an immigrant can make your life harder than it needs to be.

Everytime you walk near a street, you could have the chance of getting hit by a car, any time you go to a bar, you have the chance of getting your drink drugged, any time your drive your car, you have a chance of your car dying, exploding, or having a flat. Any time you use public Wifi, someone could hack your computer, steal your credit card info, or other private info.

Everytime you walk of your house, you have a chance of something killing you, hurting you, or ruining you. Everytime you make a friend, there's a chance they could be an enemy. Every time you make a choice, it could turn out badly.



THE ABOVE IS -NOT- healthy way of thinking. You should NOT think like that, and if you think that just because something COULD happen to the point of trying to prepare on how to avoid it, then you are not in a healthy state of mind and you need to worry about a lot more for yourself than someone stealing anything from you.
