We used an attorney for our AOS due to the complexity of the process and our particular situation. She was amazing and I felt it was well worth it. Thankfully we didn't have even a hint of the problems that others have mentioned with their lawyers.

When it came to ROC, we did it ourselves. It was relatively straight forward and I never regretted the decision except when the RFE came. Nevertheless, we took care of that ourselves along with Visa Journey and it all worked out.

In the end, you need to do what you are comfortable with regardless of everyone else's opinion. If that means hiring a lawyer, then interview several of them and pick the one you like the best.

When the time comes and I'll have to remove the conditions, will I need to pay the 165 dollars fee again for the green card or is it a one time payment?

Also, has anyone ever used the Self E-Verify thing on USCIS? I tried to use it yesterday and it said the following:

"Sorry, we are unable to give you access to the Self Check service at this time because the third party identity assurance service was unable to generate enough information about you in order to create a quiz to confirm your identity. The information you provided has not been checked against U.S. government databases for employment eligibility."

no, it's not a renewal, you will have to file the i751 form, payment and evidence of bona fide marriage to get the 10 year GC

Thanks for replying! Have you tried using the self e-verify thing? I know many businesses use it nowadays, when I did, it gave me an error

No, I haven't tried it. I don't know if my employer used it but if they did they never had any issues.

I use it e-verify for all new hires at the hotel I work for. We use a business log in that we have to pay for though.

I just tried the self e-verify and I got the same error message. We probably haven't been in the US long enough for the third party research company to be able to generate that quiz they're talking about, to confirm our identity. An employer will be able to run your green card though and get correct info.

Hiring an attorney won't do anything to help, you need to have more evidence and an attorney can't manufacture evidence for you. There are many more things you can provide as evidence such as joint health and car insurance, naming each other beneficiaries on life insurance policies, have wills drawn up naming each other as beneficiaries, you can show drivers licenses with the same address, affidavits from family members attesting to your marriage, getting joint credit cards, and joint car payments/ownership are just a few examples. You pay attorneys to file the documents that you gather! Don't waste your money if your case is routine. You could always pay a one time consultation fee for an attorney to look over your documents (we did very early in our process), but it is pretty straight forward. As mentioned, wills and life insurance are great. Good luck!

The card number on a green card is on the reverse, on the magnetic/holographic strip.

It's either your I-485 receipt number, I-751 receipt number, or your immigrant visa case number if you obtained LPR status through an immigrant visa.

Well I looked at my green card which I obtained via consular processing and the IV case # isn't shown on it, instead there's a receipt number that I got online after I paid the 165 dollars fee that I used to track my green card. IV case number is the serial of numbers you used on the CEAC DOS website to inquire info on your case (NVC stage)

Hi all! It might be a little too early but I just want to get ahead of things so I won't have to worry about it last minute. I became a conditional permanent resident last year ( entered the U.S on a CR-1 visa) meaning that I have to remove the conditions sometime next year. I've already started gathering paperwork to prove the legitimacy of the marriage. As I got more into this, I encountered this issue: Me and my spouse filed jointly last month for 2016. However, in 2015 (when we were still married) I didn't have SSN, and wasn't in the country neither. Should I still add my spouse tax returns for 2015 along with the petition? Also, should I attach the tax returns with the IRS tax return transcripts or the transcripts alone will do?

I only attached return transcript. I was told they prefer the transcript.

I would just send joint tax returns. By that time, you will at least have 2 year tax returns. However, I can't think of anything bad if you attach 2015 return. It just shows the process of your application.
