When Can You Enter The US? Questions also interview

Hi All,

My sweetheart and I got our NOA2 approval March 8th by e-mail and recieved it offically by post 11th March. So we've got going through the NVC, Embassy, Medical and interview to go yet.

I just wanted to know when you have the visa in hand how soon are you actually allowed to go "home" to your partner? I read somewhere on here that at the interview they ask you when you plan to go also get married and you've to say later than you actually have in mind. Do they get suspicious otherwise? If we are approved and we get the visa I'd like to stay a few nights in london after the interview and then just go. Is that ok to do? It's to save us money and god we've been like this for 6 years. We just wanna get together asap. But how soon is too soon? I don't want them throwing me back at the POE noticing we got the approval say a few days before....

Also I'm a little worried about the interview questions too. I've read the guide on this site of all possible questions. I'm just concern how far they read into your words. Say if they asked me "Why do you want to live in America?" and I say "Because I love and want to be with my partner, and we figured the US would be the best place for us to be because of our disabilities....we'd have a better quality of life there as pose to england." Which is true....that is why I chose to go there rather than him come here. I just don't want them thinking I'm trying to get in for medical purposes.....ack worries! Do they question their questions answers?

Once you have the Visa in your passport, you can leave for the U.S. that very same day if you want to. There's no problem with it looking suspicious.... you just want to get "home" as soon as possible.

You don't have to have an actual wedding date if you haven't planned it yet, just tell them that you will be married within the 90 days after entry.

I doubt they will ask you why you want to move to the U.S. I think the fact that you are marrying a USC is reason enough. I wouldn't worry too much about that part.

Ditto but the passport/visa has to be delivered to you doesn't it??? I'm not sure you can pick it up? or maybe you could have it delivered to where you are staying?

Fiona, I encourage you to focus your reading on London K-1 interview experiences. There are many posted here, of course (the archives have even more!), and you can look at the britishexpats marriage group, and www.kamya.com/interview . Your Consulate is unique, and you will find that next to zero of the questions you've read will be asked of you.

You also are free to leave as soon as you've got your passport back; the POE won't think a thing of it. Back when we got the visa at the conclusion of the interview, people would literally fly out later that day if they could. So, your plan to stay in London is fine, and come in a couple of days or whenever.

It's good that you know that your more unusual medical situation will come up. I imagine that the CO's primary concern will be that you can support yourselves, so document the info you have on that very well and be prepared to discuss it frankly. You haven't shared a lot about how you'll manage that, but I've come to see over time that you are so sensible and are planning so well that I'm sure you've taken good care to make sure you'll be covered.

An immigration attorney who posts at another group doesn't mind sharing his interview tips:

"Follow my three rules --

1. Tell the truth [which includes don't guess and if you don't know, say so],

2. Understand the question being asked [if you don't understand, ask that it be repeated] and

3. answer ONLY the question being asked [do you know what time it is? yes, I do.]. Do NOT try and figure out what the DAO is after -- just follow the three rules.

The idea of the 3 rules is that you help the DAO approve the case OR you avoid shooting yourself in the foot."

#3 is the hardest for most people. I certainly drilled my DAH on that one (yet another chatty Brit, him). The expanded version of MrF's #3 is:

When asked "Do you know what time it is?", there are 2 possible answers--Yes or No.

Did you ever find out about accessability at the Consulate? You could give them a heads up before your interview so they can accomodate you inside, as well. Our interview was conducted on foot through a glass window (like at a bank), fyi.

PS: for the curious, DAO is District Adjudicating Officer or similar.. MrF was referring to AOS interviews in this post, but the principle is sound for any immigration interview.

PPS: meant to say, yes, you can have the visa delivered to your hotel, or whever you like, like Sammy suggested.

Sorry it's taken me a while to respond. I have been checking back here I didn't abandon it. Thank you everyone for the great advice and positivity. I've taken it all onboard.

Next challenge....finding a hotel in london with wheelchair access and places to loan medical equipment ...wish me luck on the search

Andy came through the surgery and is now back home. Haven't had a minute to update our website blog if any of you guys like to check our site He's very dopped up, they got him on one of the strongest painkillers out there which is causing him to fall asleep every few minutes.....hes also have other affects....confusion etc...But thankfully he's getting weaned down on these till he's off them completely. His surgery was a success his pain level has decreased masses. He says to tell you guys hi and thanks for all the info. 'sigh this was very hard for us, I was in pieces while he was in hospital (huh great support...) but things can only get better now right? God where are you letter from NVC .....

Just so you know the letter from the NVC arent always accurate. Our case has already been sent to Rio and we have our interview date. Yesterday I got the letter dated March 15 from the NVC telling us they have received our case and will send it to Rio within 2 weeks.

My husband (then fiance was approved for his Visa on a Tuesday, we had to go back and pick it up at the embassy on Wednesday, and We traveled back to the USA together. It wasn't a problem, nor did he get questioned about it. Once it was approved it was his visa:) I was just so stressed out with the timeline, I convinced myself that NOTHING was going to go wrong.
