Hello! I'm a Canadian and I'm living in the US with my husband. I am a green card holder and had my conditions removed last year.

I am currently pregnant and expecting my daughter this month.

My daughter will have a dual citizen, yes?

Are there any extra forms I need to fill out?

Will I need to apply for a Canadian passport for her or some other Canadian ID, or not unless we travel to Canada?

Thanks for any help.

Also, for 2. Is this something I should do right after she is born, or is it something she can do later on if she chooses?

Is your child already a citizen?

In general, a child born to a Canadian parent outside Canada before April 17, 2009, is a Canadian citizen. However, a child born to a Canadian parent outside Canada on or after April 17, 2009, is a Canadian citizen at birth only if that child is born in the first generation outside Canada, that is, at the time of their birth, their Canadian parent:

  • was born in Canada, or
  • became a Canadian citizen by immigrating to Canada (becoming a permanent resident) and being granted citizenship (also known as naturalization).

If your child is a Canadian citizen, use the Application for a Citizenship Certificate under section 3 (CIT 0001).

Baby will be a Canadian at birth as long as you were born in Canada. You don't have to fill out the citizenship papers right away.

I still haven't mostly because it's not needed unless we are trying to get a Canadian passport or sin number. We will never fly so all they need is their birth certificate to cross.
