Do the officers ask about divorce in detail or at all? Such as why did the previous marriage not work out and so on? (London embassy)

How much detail should be provided?

It depends on the overall case but yes, they can ask in detail; if it is the beneficiary who got divorced to make sure it wasn't to gain immigration benefits via marriage to a USC, and if it is the petitioner, to make sure the beneficiary knows about the USC's history.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Yes, they can ask. Most, however, do not. There are stories of unethical questions being asked. You can see them in the forums. I would have the info, but don't get overly nervous about it.

CO asked me what the reason for my divorce was. I just told her the truth. My ex connected with a childhood friend and cheated on me with that dude and that was that. CO didn't press for any further information regarding my divorce after that explanation.
