Hello,

My fiancé and I have applied for a K-1 and are in the waiting process. He is from Mexico and tells me that the Catholic Church there does not have legal marriage authority. So if we do a wedding there without getting a civil service, we wouldn't be considered legally married in Mexico.

Are we able to have a religious service like this before entering the US? Would this be seen as a red flag to immigration and cause for dismissal?

I even called an attorney about this and have found no clear answers. Does anyone know??

Do NOT do it, anything that looks like a wedding regardless of if it is a legal wedding or not could put your k1 at risk

Thank you!! We have decided to wait until after all the immigration stuff is behind us. The Mexico Catholic Church requires a civil wedding anyway, so we are just considering it a step in the process. Pushes our religious wedding back into 2018, but we can live with that.

Good idea.

Google "k-1 denied because of religious wedding" and you will see why it's not a good idea to have any type of wedding (even if not legal) before immigrating on the K-1.

We are a little bummed but figure it's better to be safe than sorry. "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's" and all that. It will be weird to be civilly married first, but it's only temporary until paperwork is all sorted out. Then we can go back and have the big wedding I want. We have started marriage prep and could possibly cram a Catholic wedding into our fiancé visa timeline, but we are starting to think it's not worth the headache - especially after the headache of all this paperwork. It will be nice to slow down.
