If you actually took the time to read it, it says Kaepernick will terminate his contract and become a free agent. It also says there's a good chance he ends up back with the 9'ers.

It's the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs drafted a guy who choked his pregnant girlfriend and punched her in the stomach. He's on the team because he can play football. The Broncos got rid of Jesus' right hand man because he couldn't play. Sorry to disappoint you, but they don't pay these guys for their character.

Kind of. I think it sounds a lot more like they made his contract untenable but made it so he could save face, in an effort to make him want to leave. Took his 6-year contract down to 2 years, essentially.

The restructured pact eliminates roughly $14.5 million in injury guarantees for 2017 and dissolves the final three years of a six-year deal that previously kept him under contract through 2020, Rapoport adds. Sure but he agreed to that. He didn't have a lot of guaranteed money in the last 4 years of the deal. When NFL players get cut, they don't get any non-guaranteed money. He basically took the guaranteed money from the last 4 years of the deal as a roster bonus this year. It required his signature.

The argument would be he wasn't playing well enough to keep his job for the last 4 years anyway, so he gets his money now instead of getting cut, and SF gets out of the contract in the most favorable situation for them. In football terms, this was a win-win. Kaepernick wanted out of SF since last year, and probably they wanted him out to. He gets his money, they probably take less of a cap hit, and everyone is happy.

Turns out though, SF doesn't have an answer at QB, and many teams won't want to take the controversy that Kaepernick brings, so don't be surprised if he resigns there.
