I think the title of the article should specify that he said it 25 years ago while a student and I'm pretty sure (from what I can find looking him up briefly, I didn't know who he was until this) he has said that he was wrong. At least about other things he wrote at that time, haven't found a specific situation he has mentioned that one claim and said he was wrong.

In general I am a little more lax with people for things they did in the early adulthood. At least until the brain is fully mature (which most psychologists/psychiatrists would say is ~age 25). I'd rather look at what he has done in his professional career over the last 20 years (which I haven't yet for him so I'm not actually endorsing him or anything).

Regardless, the statement, if made (not sure we passed the exacting standard of proof demanded by Trump supporters when similar statements and positions are alledged regarding Trump or his Cabinet picks) was wrong and ludicrous.

I guess I was also saying though that he may not be a nutty Democrat NOW, but may have still said that 25 years ago. People are allowed to do things in their youth that they later admit to regreting. As long as it isn't something horrible (murder).

It's just like how Trump admits that in his youth (his 50's) he said some things that he should not have. He's much more mature now
