I found this to be interesting. Quite a bit of hub-bub about Standing Rock the past little while, though much of it was pushed aside during the election. But this fellow has gone out of his way to clear up the muddy waters. Interesting article, to say the least.

"Last week, a Louisiana sheriff spent several days in North Dakota witnessing firsthand the ongoing protests and the responses by law enforcement surrounding the Dakota Access Pipeline Project.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, who is also the president of the Nation Sheriff's Association, visited Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to view how law enforcement agencies were working to protect area citizens and respond to protests.

Before traveling, Sheriff Champagne admitted he had the wrong impression about the pipeline based on what he called sensational news reports that the pipeline was to run directly through the Standing Rock Reservation and disturb ancient burial grounds. "

"I learned first that the pipeline project, which has been in the works for several years, will traverse four states including North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois carrying crude oil. I was surprised to learn that a natural gas pipeline is already underground on the same right of way. The DAP has received all federal approvals over several years and, litigation which attempted to stop it in the federal courts has been resolved. Despite this project being very "federal" in nature and clearly in interstate commerce, the Obama administration has refused to provide any law enforcement or other support to North Dakota state and local law enforcement that has placed them in the position of having to enforce the rule of law. As usual, law enforcement is put between the rock and hard place due to various political agendas."

big round of applause for the protesters and water protectors. law enforcement is getting plenty of support and back up from their corporate sponsors. it's almost like none of you have ever seen the movie poltergeist. obama should respect the treaty and native americans and do the right thing.

*SMH*. There is just no helping you, is there? The pipeline is ALREADY THERE. Has been for years. They are simply wanting to lay another one along side the existing one. The geological research has been done, nothing is being violated, except the money that will be wasted if the 95% completed pipeline isn't finished. If it remains incompleted, then throwing away billions of dollars will happen. Makes a lot of sense, eh?

And have you seen the pipeline infrastructure in the US???

interesting, no? is bismarck a reservation too?

An early proposal for the Dakota Access Pipeline called for the project to cross the Missouri River north of Bismarck, but one reason that route was rejected was its potential threat to Bismarck’s water supply, documents show.

Now a growing number of protesters are objecting to the oil pipeline’s Missouri River crossing a half-mile north of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, which they argue could threaten the water supply for the tribe and other communities downstream.
Early in the planning process, Dakota Access considered but eliminated an alternative that would have crossed the Missouri River about 10 miles north of Bismarck instead of the route currently under construction.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers evaluated the Bismarck route and concluded it was not a viable option for many reasons. One reason mentioned in the agency’s environmental assessment is the proximity to wellhead source water protection areas that are avoided to protect municipal water supply wells.
In addition, the Bismarck route would have been 11 miles longer with more road crossings and waterbody and wetland crossings. It also would have been difficult to stay 500 or more feet away from homes, as required by the North Dakota Public Service Commission, the corps states.
The Bismarck route also would have crossed an area considered by federal pipeline regulators as a “high consequence area,” which is an area determined to have the most significant adverse consequences in the event of a pipeline spill.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe argues that consequences would be severe if the 30-inch pipeline carrying 450,000 barrels of oil per day were to leak near the reservation’s water intake valves. The tribe is suing the corps over its approval of the water crossing. A hearing is scheduled for next week in Washington, D.C.
“We are taking all necessary legal steps to curtail construction on the pipeline until our grievances are heard and resolved in court,” Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault II said Thursday.
State regulators did not evaluate the Bismarck route because Dakota Access had selected the current Missouri River crossing when it submitted its application in December 2014, said Public Service Commission Chairwoman Julie Fedorchak.
A map included in the Dakota Access application has a May 2014 date on the Bismarck route. The proposed route was changed in September 2014 to cross the Missouri River near the Standing Rock reservation, according to dates on the PSC documents.
Dakota Access said in a statement that the company conducts extensive surveys of proposed pipeline routes to mitigate the pipeline’s impact on the area and determine the safest route.
The corps, which issued a permit for the water crossing, said the pipeline will be installed 92 feet below the riverbed with horizontal directional drilling methods to minimize impacts. The Corps also noted safeguards that will be in place, including remote monitoring of the pipeline and emergency response plans.

So facts be damned, your mind is made up, and you're stubborn. Got it. Moving on...

I think we should be careful not to dismiss the tribe's desire to have their land respected, but perhaps from an environmental standpoint, we should also be careful to consider the impact of this and any pipeline on drinking water, in the event of an accident. Accidents do happen. They have been happening very recently in the south which caused prices to rise up north for a few months, and there was another spill that dumped into the Susquehanna in the past month or so. I cannot recall the documentary, but it was somewhere in WVA, where a company promised they would be respectful of a burial area, and completely destroyed it in the process (not to mention contaminating the water). This reservation in particular has had a history with our government, of which, we the people should be ashamed of how we have behaved (even in recent history). Robert Fool Bear, one of the local district chairmen, isn't very happy about the protests, not because he doesn't see anything wrong with protesting, but because he finds the attention hypocritical. Little attention was paid in the past and no one voiced their concerns. Perhaps they should have long ago. Would we have listened to them then? But it doesn't take long to do a little research to see this community seems to be in need of more than just assurances of safe and clean drinking water.

Just because you dug a hole on a piece of land and squatted over it first does not mean its yours. If you can't evolve and maintain the strength it takes to hold on to that land its not yours. Be it a country, or tribal hunting grounds.

The property some of you on here own (landowners), is only yours as long as our Military is strong enough and our constitution backed enough for you to hold on to it.

The alternate is to use trains.

I like trains.

But they are more risky.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

or we could just go with the original plan, through bismark. not sure why we ever deviated from this plan..

People demonstrating at North Dakota's Access Pipeline protest have expressed frustration at white demonstrators who are reportedly turning up to "colonise" the camp.

Concerns have been raised by protestors on social media, who claim that people are arriving at the Standing Rock demonstration for the "cultural experience" and treating it like Burning Man festival.

Protestor Alicia Smith wrote on Facebook: "On my way back from the camps. Need to get something off my chest that I witnessed and found very disturbing in my brief time there that I believe many others have started to speak up about as well.

"White people are colonizing the camps. I mean that seriously. Plymouth rock seriously. They are coming in, taking food, clothing and occupying space without any desire to participate in camp maintenance and without respect of tribal protocols.

"These people are treating it like it is Burning Man or The Rainbow Gathering and I even witnessed several wandering in and out of camps comparing it to those festivals."
