Hello everyone, i'm from Mauritius and my k1 interview will be held at the US consulate in Johannesburg South Africa. I was wondering when you are approved after the interview, how many days does it take to get your passport back? And if it takes more than a week is it possible to get back to my country after the interview and mail my passport to the US consulate in Johannesburg for the k1 visa stamp? Has anyone been in the same situation as me? Please help.

Hello,

Unfortunately there is no guarantee in how long it will take. If you look at the VJ timelines of others who interviewed in Johannesburg you will see some got their passport returned within a couple days but that wasn’t the case for us.

My now husband also travelled from Mauritius to Johannesburg for his medical and K-1 interview. The whole process took 23 days total… he arrived in SA the day before his medical and left for the US the day after getting his visa. When he called the Doctor's office they said they could not schedule his medical appointments any closer to his interview date because there would be a risk the medical report would not arrive at the consulate in time for his interview. Once he interviewed it took 11 days to get his passport returned with his visa. This was one pricey trip!

I am not sure if they will allow you to mail the passport to them. You can email and ask them or call them. From what I recall, they were pretty good about replying to questions.

Good luck,
