Hi,

Recenlty married my husband. He was here on a B2. I tried to add him to my health insurance. We live in NY. I was told he needed a SS number or Green Card number.

Does this sound right?

If so, does anyone have an appox time frame after papers are filed until he'd have a Green Card number?

My health care insurance asked for my husband's name and date of birth. That was all. Maybe each company varies, but I would explain the situation to them.

Escalate this in your HR department to someone who knows. My wife was on my insurance plan without an SS#, without a GC, and without even yet being in the USA.

What's the insurance company? Is it through work? You're going to have to escalate this.

Your other options is buy through the state or federal exchange. It is currently open enrollment.

Not having an SSN is not a factor that would deny health coverage (however it can complicate it via the sheer ignorance of employees), under the law, but the problem becomes when your husband has no other legal status currently. As a visitor on a B2, visitors won't have access to insurance as a resident would. This is probably where insurance reps become confused. Have you filed to adjust his status, and have you applied for an EAD with that? If you have applied for an EAD with the paperwork, the earliest you'd most likely be able to successfully apply is when he has that legal document, proving he is legal to be here. You could try applying with an NOA1 (proof that you have applied to adjust), however finding a representative that actually knows about immigration and the law will be difficult. That being said, these numbers are not a requirement, it's just getting them to understand that.

Getting married is a life event so you can add your hubby. You can usually add a spouse without an SSN. It is insurance company dependant.

Or you can go ahead and get an SSN.

A wait for green card would take too much time.

If you are getting the insurance through NY State Market, then they will ask for a social security or proof of your husband's status in the US. They will give you about 4 months to get all of those. But after marriage, I am pretty sure he can be added already. I am from NY too and that's how we did it.
