I think it would be awesome if you were single but not worth it if you are in a relationship. You would be far away so much and that is a killer on relationships for a lot of people. I'm sure your marriage is worth much more than a well paying job!

I agree, it's probably a huge red flag already if you hubby doesn't want you to do it :( It would be different if he didn't want you to take ANY job you wanted, etc but this is one of them that can have a definite impact on the marriage..being away a lot, etc..not being based near home...all factors. One of my three best friends has been a flight attendant for a long time in the past and she didn't make near the money you are talking about..but she worked for commuter airlines..like the smaller ones. For example, the one I worked for for a couple of years...United Express. They are the small version of 'big' United. It's a bit easier toget one of those jobs, but not the same money and all the same problems. I'm not sure if EVERY airline starts at the money you were saying, I would guess they're all different. Also, it may be a moot point because it can be very difficult to get a flight attendant position...especially right now I would think, with plenty of experienced ones available with past layoffs, etc and not tons of hiring going on(at least last I knew) My friend did very well at her job, but found it nearly impossible(and she never did) get a job with the bigger airlines that pay better, etc. (you normally have to go to open houses they have and then get chosen to come back again for an interview if you make the first cut, etc. and they are normally pretty choosy)Plus, her hubby didn't want her to be away all the time either. I think you would find even if you did decide to do it against your husbands wishes, that it would be difficult to get a position in this field right now anyway. I wish you all the best in whatever you DO decide to eventually do!!! M.

and they only get paid the per flight hour. so that is $17.50 if the flight took 30 mins you would only get half of that. I think it is actuly from departare that you are on the clock so to speak.. all the ####### before hand is on your time. it can get stress full, dealing with a lot of differnt kinds of people. Like rude etc.. It is not just serving coke and peanuts or food..you have to react to a situation quickly.

so carefuly think about it. their is other job positions with airlines.. why not ticket agent/costermer service.

Take care

from the moment the aircraft doors close - til the doors open you are getting paid.

one perk about being a gate agent is, depending on your airline.

you can actully fly free on other carriors. where as those employees working in the offices have to pay the surcharge on those other carriors.

this perk is called Local agreement.

On most airlines the FA's only get paid from the time they release the parking brake until it gets set again. So, all that time your fating around doing whatever before and after takeoff is unpaid.

Nina. I was looking at the sky west airline website.

you do realize training is for 6 months UNPAID! there is more information reguarding training, uniforms.

Things have definitely changed then. My ex works for skywest and she did get paid during training and it only lasted 2 months.

The programs I looked into had a starting wage of less than $20K p.a. which combined with being "on reserve" for at least a year, having to relocate, having the left-over routes that the more senior FAs don't want and the being away from home so much meant that it wasn't the job for me.

That being said, you do get to go all over the place and meet some good people.

I couldn't be away from Joel...being apart during this process has shown me that. I think there are tons of other careers that make that much and more. But for us, its not about the money...its about being together and building a life together. I love him too much to be away from him like that. :)

It's just that it's quick money (i think).. You're guaranteed 75hrs/mth at 17.50$/hr to start.

If that's the best reason you have to wanting to pursue this, consider that a regular f/t job at $8.00/hr (comes to $1,386.65/month) effectively pays about the same as 75hrs/month @ $17.50 ( which totals 1,312.50). I think the former is much easier to come by and much easier on a marriage. ;)

I agree with Reinhard..I could never do it, but if it was your dream or something and IF you and your hubby agreed upon it, I would be the first to say go for it! 75 hrs/mo. is less than 20 hrs a week..as he said you can find a job locally much easier and probably better than that!:) M.
