So this weekend I passed my driving test, however, my i-94 expires on Tuesday. I have filed for my EAD, AP and GC. I plan on going to the SoS tomorrow with my certificate to get my drivers license. My question is this.. has anyone ever managed to keep there license whilst waiting on there EAD in Michigan. I planned to pass my test and get some good driving practice and learn the area etc so that when I got my EAD I was comfortable with the area for work reasons. Now it seems that I cannot drive from the time my i-94 expires to the time I get my EAD, 3 months potentially. Is this correct?

Thanks!

You will likely need your EAD, yes.

Hello!

I went throught the same thing almost 3 years ago, what certeficare are you planing to show ? You will have to wait until you get your work permit card , once you have that you will have to go to a social security office to apply for your social security number , which depending on the tyoe of visa you came into the country may take weeks , once you have all these you can apply for your michigan drivers license . You will have to take the test and road test .

Hey Rod.

I have already done everything you have mentioned (SS, Theory Test and Road Test). The certificate I was going to show was the one you get when you pass your skills test.

Anyway...

I could not get it as my i-94 has now expired. As i thought. However, the guy at the desk told me to bring in my i-797 once i receive it in the mail and he may be able to help. Long shot I know as I'm pretty sure you need your EAD but I guess I might as well try.

Anyone ever heard of your I-797 being enough before you get your EAD?

Some states will accept the I-485 receipt (I-797C) as proof of your legal status. Most will want to see an EAD, however.
