Concentration camp ice dance by wife of Putin official causes uproar

The wife of Vladimir Putin’s spokesman has caused controversy by dressing in a concentration camp uniform for a televised ice dance routine that some have called the “Holocaust on ice”. Tatiana Navka, a former Olympic ice dancer and the wife of presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, and her dancing partner, actor Andrei Burkovsky, appeared in striped uniforms bearing yellow six-pointed stars on the popular celebrity skating TV show Ice Age.

Their routine for the song Beautiful That Way – by Israeli singer Achinoam “Noa” Nini – was based on the Academy-Award-winning Italian film Life Is Beautiful.

In the film, a Jewish father pretends for the sake of his young son that the family’s internment by the Nazis is part of an elaborate game.

In their performance, Navka and Burkovsky smiled and pantomimed shooting at each other in front of an imaginary child, before Burkovsky exited to the sound of machine gun fire.

“Definitely watch this! One of my favourite numbers!” Navka wrote under photographs from the performance on her Instagram account, adding that: “Our children should know and remember that terrible time.”

The judges gave the pair perfect scores for both technique and artistry, but the performance divided news outlets and social media users.

I'm kind of divided on this one. Millions of ethnic Russians and Russian Jewish people died in the holocaust too. Russians are not insensitive to the suffering of WW2. They lost millions of civilians and there are monuments, memorials and commemoratives every other day there it seems. Anyone here with a Russian spouse will tell you it's a subject you approach with caution and sensitivity

At the same time, it's just such an ill conceived subject for ice dancing. Even to do it, I'm not sure Life is Beautiful is the best choice for an ice dance interpretation. I tried to approach it with an open mind but I had to cringe a little, not something that usually happens watching Russian ice dancing.

It's one of those things where the idea/intention is fine, but the execution is totally wrong and off the mark. During the Sochi Olympics, one of the ice dancers did a routine to the "Schindler's List" theme, as I recall, which was great and very tasteful. To do it in such a literal way is a bit too much. Art created metaphors for a reason, heh. That's my take on it.

Also, it's just even more odd that it's a Putin official's wife. I mean, you'd expect more for someone so high on the ladder in Russian society. Cringe-worthy indeed.

Did you see the comedy movie "Blades of Glory" with Will Ferrell. They did a ice skating routine with JFK and Marilyn Monroe it reminded me of this.
