Travelling on extension letter while I-751 pending

One of the reasons for the extension letter is so you can travel during the ROC process (keep both your expired greencard and the letter with you). You don't need to get a stamp as long as the travel is within the time frame of the extension.

However, I believe that if the extension letter is about to expire and your ROC is still in process, you can make an appointment at your local USCIS office to get an extension of the extension. I think this is done by stamping your passport.

Good luck!

That is the purpose of the extension letter while they are in the processing your case. I did bring mine with 2yr GC expired when we ONLY travel within the country but the TSA in an airport did question me & almost won't let me pass thru the security. I only used my married name that time for our itinerary didn't know what's ahead.

At the end of the day, they let me pass thru security.

🌷Came to US in the Spring of 2013 thru K-1 Visa🌷

Citizenship completed in the Summer of 2017

😊Applying for IR2😊

Just show your driver's licence, foreign passport or state ID to TSA - they do not need to see your green card or extension letter.

Showing anything out of the ordinary to TSA agents tends to confuse them (I've seen them argue in Phoenix that Washington D.C. DL wasn't a valid ID because it wasn't from a state or province.... Duh!)

My hubby and I went overseas this year with his ROC in progress and his expired green card + extension letter. We used these to obtain his Schengen Visa... long story short, we were separated and detained when we returned to the US P.O.E. but were eventually let back in (after about 3hrs). So, if you are traveling overseas, upon returning, it more than likely won't be an issue, but there is always the possibility of being taken into secondary.

With domestic travel, you may just need the "Real-ID" State DL or state ID, but I'm not 1000% sure that those are being enforced at the moment. If not, I think they will be in the near future.

Hi! We went to Germany, and had gone to Los Angeles for his visa interview. They were very knowledgeable about the US LPR documents (more than the CBP officer). They did mention that they are changing the timeframe requirements on the travel insurance to cover 2 weeks more than the planned stay, as many people change their plans and extend their stay. It was a very wonderful experience. If my hubby needs another visa, we can just send the paperwork from now on (for up to 5? Years). So that's convenient.

I recently traveled overseas, with a layover at a US airport. I showed the following:

US - US domestic : DL

US to International: Passport

International to US: GC and extension letter

US - US domestic: DL

I had no issues entering the UK with my passport, and no issues boarding domestic flights with my DL. The only slight issue I had was checking into the UK - US flight as the API couldn't process my expired GC. I had a message explaining that I had to physically check in at the airport so a staff member could review my documentation. The check in assistant had no issue with the expired GC and extension letter, but they had recently upgraded their system so she had a few technical issues. I had no issues when I landed in the US. The immigration agent just read the letter and checked the A-number on the letter and the GC matched.

Okay, here is my experience.

My I-751 is pending and the expiration is feb 25 2018. I am travelling to India soon and wanted a 3 day stopover in dubai on the way back. According to IATA and UAE travel authorities you need to have  6 months buffer to expiration for your US Visa , GreenCard and/or your passport. So in my case I was told I needed to get a separate Dubai visa prior to entry. Usually for greencard holders you get a visa on arrival in Dubai. If I had an I-551 stamp I would have been good... But it is hard to get an infopass appointment.

So look out for where you travel. I will need to get an I-551 stamp soon as I have a schengen trip planned soon. This past year I have travelled to Canada, Mexico and to Schengen countries on the letter and expired physical greencard.

Mine's a somewhat different case, and I travel out of the US in a few weeks. I don't have a physical green card! Because the expiration date of my green card was wrong (it's Apr 2018, but should be Dec 2017), I sent it in for correction but the I-90 application is still pending.

Meanwhile, after a year-long battle with USCIS, I finally got them to correct the green card date on their records and accept my I-751 ROC application, so now I have the extension letter but no green card (I just have a notarized copy of my green card with the wrong expiration date). Should I go get a temporary I-551 stamp before I travel?
