That's a funny one. Now seriously, if Cuba was such a great place we wouldn't have Cubans celebrating on the streets of Miami, and his own daughter wouldn't have fled the country. I've never personally been there but my parents have and they talked about how poor everyone is. That's what happens when everyone can have the same car, same house, get paid the same, etc. Trying to determine who's worse Venezuela or Cuba is kind of pointless, they're both terrible so one being marginally better than the other doesn't really help.

Never been to Cuba, but from my research Cuba was a alright place to live during the 70's and 80's due to Russia giving them so much money. But once Communism fell in Russia and the hand out stoped the place / economy turned pretty bad.

I will never go there unless they get rid of Communism.

I think any country that attempts to elevate their leader to a godlike status is pretty bad. In the past it was the monarchies particularly in Europe, but also in Asia. Lately it seems to be the communists/socialist countries such as Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, and the former Soviet Union (at least under Lenin/Stalin). I for one, would one day like to visit North Korea, but not under its current political leadership. So far, the closest I have come is a visit to one of the tunnels the DPRK dug under the DMZ. I made a comment to my Korean friend while we were there that went something like this..."The North toiled to dig this tunnel through solid granite, and the South turned it into a tourist attraction".

When was his last public appearance? Maybe he died awhile ago and they just kept it quiet for a bit.

I don't like to generalise about people, and I also believe that everyone has some bit of good in them. I don't think he was 100% evil, and I even imagine he had some good intentions. That being said, the amount of "honoring" that is going on for the man from unlikely sources is rather surprising.

Have people seen the #trudeaueulogy that is going around? It's quite funny.

"Today, the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades. Fidel Castros legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights.

I wonder if he made that speech from Guantanamo bay?

Pierre Trudeau and Fidel Castro were very good friends apparently, and Justin Trudeau had met Castro on several occasions. I think the last was at his fathers funeral IIRC. His statement was not all that surprising. It would have been better to do in a personal capacity rather than an official one, but I'm not sure world leaders ever have that luxury.

As bad and as Fidel Castro might well be, I can't help but thinking the average Cubans still have it better than much of South America, or even Mexico. Strange how the type of government, seems to have such a bearing on how a dictator is perceived by Americans.

Mexico is pretty nice in general. I am not familiar with South America but I would think the majority is much better place to live than cuba.

He couldn't possibly have. Obama shut that place down, right after he got all the boots off the ground in Afghanistan.

No, Obama didn't shut that place down, because of Republican obstructionism.
