Bringing engagement ring to Canada to propose (merged thread)

Hey guys,

I'm visiting my girlfriend in Canada in a couple of weeks and am going to be proposing to her while I am there. I have already bought the ring from the US. Do I need to declare that ring when coming into Canada? Could any problems coming up trying to bring it in? We have not started the K-1 Visa yet and are waiting until after this visit cause we've heard how nearly impossible it is to visit while the Visa is pending. Thanks in advance!

Well - unless its from the bubble gum machine and under $60 - you will have to pay a tax.

I suppose there is not a restriction on it being YOUR ring. And you are wearing it around your pinky toe..... or attached on a necklace around your neck as a type of pendant.

When you get to Canada - try not to "lose" it. Some lucky lady might stumble on it and keep it....

Gifts

You can import gifts for friends into Canada duty- and tax-free as long as each gift is valued at CAN$60 or less. If the gift is worth more than CAN$60, you will have to pay duty and taxes on the excess amount. You cannot claim alcoholic beverages, tobacco products or business-related material as gifts.

nope. you'll have to pay duty and import taxes. not to mention it could be holed up in customs for a couple of weeks this time of year.

Doesn't it seem funny/stupid that the engagement ring purchased in the US was already taxed, then a duty tax is assessed when going to another country for the proposal only to have the final destination of the ring coming back to the US.

I believe that this is a grey area. ihave seen many vj stories of ladies wearing 'stunt rings' to avoid duty when travelling. particularly Canadians

I claim that would work just fine. You are one of the lucky ones that can have your significant other come to the states.

Does anyone know for sure on all of this? We are really trying to do everything legally. The last thing we want is to shoot ourselves in the foot.
