You take your official marriage cert to the SS office and have them update it, then when you get your new SS card, go to DMV and update your license. It was pretty easy. One thing (if for some reason your partner has 2 last names, you can change your last name, to ANYTHING/ANY COMBINATION on the marriage certificate, they bullied me really hard about this (I only wanted one of my husband's last names) but IT SAYS SO ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE that you can have ANY combination of last name(s). Just FYI :)

Oh I thought you meant you updated USCIS. We filed AOS under my maiden name. I didn’t think to just put my married name on there. So when I tried to change it at the SS office they said USCIS needed to be updated before they’d change it. At my biometrics the officer asked me about it and I told him I was just gonna change my name during removal of conditions so I wouldn’t have to pay the fee and he said yes that’s what I was going to suggest to you.

Good day everyone. I’m in a similar situation, I’m in queue for my immigrant visa appointment. All paper work was done in my maiden name. I have five months in my passport and I want to renew it with my husband last name for the interview. Do you think it will cause a problem at the interview? Thanks for the replies.

It should be ok as long as you have paperwork to prove but you never know with these things. I would just wait til you have greencard and have entered the states to do it.

I called NVC last night and they told me it won’t be a problem, but I should carry both new and old passport to the interview. I also emailed my embassy and they said it shouldn’t be a problem.
