Bernie Sanders calls Trump’s infrastructure plan "a scam"

Our infrastructure repair is certainly lacking and there are many roads, bridges and buildings in dire need of repair. One thing I've noticed being married to a Canadian and making frequent trips there, is that Canada is head and shoulders above the US in infrastructure repair and upkeep. Canada's higher taxes yield some pretty good results in this regard, imo.

I already hand over a third of my paycheck to the government. Should I just sign the whole thing over to them? Perhaps they can manage my money better than I can.

Part of the reason Canada is able to do more with their tax money per dollar than the US does is that there is less pork and corruption in their gov't and the bills they pass. Overall the Canadian tax rate is not really any more or less than what Americans pay in total when you figure in the services Canadians receive for their money. Just take your monthly healthcare payments and add that to the taxes deducted from your pay and see what that comes out to as a percentage of your gross pay. Canadians have no healthcare payments. Now figure in that the Canadians also get maternity leave for both Mother and Father for up to a year and that their infrastructure is in much better shape than ours and you might even think they actually have a better deal overall.

I wonder what part of the GOP they spend on entitlements and debt service

in regards to paternity and maternity leave I believe it's one or the other for a full year or split 6 months

I'm not sure, but I'd like to know as well. I'll give it a look if I have some time. Believe it or not I'm busy today. Don't these people know tomorrow's a holiday?

You are probably correct. I knew it was a total of one year of benefits, but I thought it was for both parents.

The only things in Canada I find that are ridiculously overpriced is alcohol and tobacco. Other than that most things are relatively the same.

I think it depends on location. For instance my wife is from Windsor, prices there are pretty comparable to what we have here in Mass for everything but real estate, alcohol and tobacco. I find real estate in Windsor(except for on the water) is much cheaper than here in Mass, we could buy the same house we have in Mass over in Windsor for about half the price. But the alcohol and tobacco are much more expensive in Windsor (all of Canada really). But if we were to drive from Windsor over the border to Detroit, wee could save a bundle on most all types of goods. Canadians are a huge part of what little economy Detroit has left.

Because of the high sales tax, we have French Canadians coming down here all the time to shop, especially on weekends in the summer, every other car will have a Quebec license plate. My wife and I have gone up there, and I can't say we were impressed with the condition of the roads or the upkeep in general...even nature here looks greener and cleaner. I don't know, maybe it's only a VT/Quebec thing and doesn't represent what you guys are seeing because for example in Wi, or at least the Milwaukee area I know roads are in much rougher shape than they are here.

In regards to paying higher taxes in order to receive more - for me it depends. Health care I do agree because it is the government's respsonsibility to make sure that not only you are safe out on the street but also your own body and physical well being. But, when it comes to other stuff, where the government gets to decide where your money goes instead of you making that decision I usually tend to be against it, it's a freedom thing for me, and whatever government gives it can just as easily take away.
