History lesson: Republicans ended slavery, Democrats started KKK

I posted this because some of the extreme left race baiters (not all left wingers only the race baiters) on this board need an education in the history of their beloved party. It's pretty rich that the democrats use "racist" as their rallying cry considering their history. They pay lip service to minority groups during elections to get their votes then can care less about them when they get in office. It's pretty disgusting.

Actually what happened is around the 1960s Democrats realized it was becoming politically unacceptable to be open racists so they became (and many still are) closet racists and hitched their wagon to the civil rights movement. Lyndon Johnson is a good example of this. As a Senator he was openly racist and opposed the civil rights movement. As vice president and later president he changed his tune and publicly supported the civil rights movement while privately still being a racist. Hillary Clinton is another example. She pays lip service to minorities but is racist behind the scenes. It has come out she regularly called her African American cooks the N word. She also gave a speech calling African Americans "super predators" and said "we need to bring them to heel". She even praised KKK member Robert Byrd. I could go on.

I want to make myself clear here. Your average low level Democrat is not racist and is probably a well meaning person. And racism does exist in the Republican party (though not nearly to the degree the race baiting Democrats would have us believe). However many of the top Democrats are closet racists or at least could care less about minorities besides getting their votes. Also Democrats who use race baiting as a tactic I would argue are largely racists themselves.

You would argue that, and you do quite often.

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.

150 years ago racist conservatives were Democrats. Today racist conservatives are Republicans. So what? It's the most feeble (and inevitable) of conservative arguments, any time the discussion turns to race.

Most people are familiar with history. Most people know about the Southern Strategy, the Dixiecrats, and Strom Thurmond. You can tell me next that the Republicans were the party of Lincoln. Sure they were. But Lincoln was no conservative, and neither were those Republicans.

It was conservatism that fought to keep slavery in the 19th century. It was conservatism that fought against the expansion of civil rights and voting rights in the 20th century. Whether those conservatives were Democrats or Republicans makes no difference to me. It is what it is, and an argument that ignores that is either uninformed, or purposefully misleading.

Hey now, let's not let facts get in the way of a good edumacation.

Sorry but it's been used twice in this thread alone:

The phrase is "Couldn't care less" or "Can't care less". Not "Could care less" or "Can care less".

The point you're trying to make is that you CAN"T care any less, because you care so little it is impossible to care less. Saying you can care less means you care.

As for the topic at hand:

I don't really care about the name "Democrat" or "Republican". It's more about what the person believes. Lincoln may have the label of Republican, but based on his policies at the time (not just slavery) he was closer to what a "Democrat" is now. I mean the Civil War primarily focused on states rights and he fought for a strong central government (and to bring the southern states back in line).

LOL.

Man... sometimes I wonder.

If you think the republicans and democrats of old are the same as they are today, then it helps to solidify the falsehoods that are taught to children for a long time. Let us remember something very carefully, before lauding the republicans of old as always the last bastion of great and everlasting freedom. Things were rather in a state of turmoil before Lincoln became president, the party demographics were changing, and abolition was suddenly becoming a very big division. The republicans of the middle 1800s, were made up of four different groups - Federalists, Free Soil Democrats who were forced out by the Jacksonians, the Know-Nothing Party , and The Whigs. So in a way, you could say this new emerging class of what was termed Republican - was a coalition of sorts. Lincoln, as kindly a man as he was - was morally opposed to slavery, but only wished to 'confine' it to already established borders. He did rightly believe though, that slavery was a great stain on America, and that such a crime we would most likely suffer for our sins as it were. Perceptive, as our sinful crimes has indeed affected the fabric of America, and may continue to do so forever. Keep this very closely in mind, that most of his presidency, Lincoln did very little to do anything about freeing slaves, even at the pushing of this new coalition party. While we typically applaud Lincoln for the emancipation, remember this act came through towards the end of the bloody war, when the North needed help very much.... and this was a 'killing blow' to the Southern states only, and not the North. The Northern slaveholders were still free to have slaves! After Lincoln's murder and forever since - each party has gone through an evolution. The 'Radical Republicans' of the 1800s as they were called are nothing like their modern counterparts, and nor are the Democrats. You could say for instance that eventually, the Republicans absorbed the Dixicrats, and the Democrats absorbed the Radical Coalition of old. That is the way it is. That is what history actually tells us.

Until a new level of inanity is breached...then you realize that at this point, after you once stated you could not care less, a new wave of despair and cynicism overtakes your soul and then you realize a new opportunity. You can care less and you might seize the opportunity to care less which gives you something to look forward to in a perverse way. Edit : changed too to to. Edited by Rob L

The terms "Republican" and "Democrat" are just placeholders. Republican means something with the Republic, whereas Democrat implies democracy.....basically neither have any remote connection to the parties or their views nowadays, even from the historical perspective it barely tells us about the parties. I mean, we might as well call them the Elephants and the Donkeys, or the X's and the Y's it wouldn't make a difference.

Since the party names are so generic, it's not surprising that they've changed and developed so much over the ages.
