I'll start...

"Why cant you just get married? Then he can just stay here like everyone else does, I know someone who did it like that. They just came, got married and they stayed, no paperwork nothing else needed for them."

Not dumb, more dumbfounding upon learning of a rejected tourist visa: "What? He's your husband, I thought he would automatically be able to visit!"

Yeah, most people have no clue about our immigration laws and procedures, including me before I found this site.

Hey, the Christmas in Mexico question isn't that crazy. In Russia, Christmas is on January 7th. Still, you'd imagine people to be slightly more knowledgeable about a country which borders the US I guess!

Americans seem to think its really easy to move all over the world. Mostly because they either have never travelled or only to places that they dont need a visa to.

Exactly. I also think because we have so many immigrants in the US, that we just assume that it must've been really easy, otherwise why would there be so many immigrants. Case in point: it did apparently used to be easier way back when, a couple decades ago, for people to immigrate.

yeah the dumbest question by far is "why are you rushing to get married after he gets here? don't you want to live together first?" (i'm a K1 petitioner)

and the other one was "well if it's so easy for other immigrants to be here illegally why doesn't he just do it?"

To be honest, as tiring as the questions of non-informed relatives and friends were during the process were, the dumbest thing I've seen is from a group of H1B visa holders who had gone through the process already and proceeded to break U.S. law.

Some H1B visa holding friends, husband and wife, invited us to go fishing with some of their H1B visa holding friends. We said sure. I was probably the only USC of the bunch. We showed up and these friends of our friends were pulling nets through a river and bagging trout by the bushel full. My wife and I spent 5 minutes explaining to our friends why we had to leave immediately and why they should probably do likewise (our friends weren't fishing - or rather, netting - only watching). Fishing with a net is potentially a felony crime in this state. Why would someone who spent so much time, money and effort to secure a visa be wiling to risk that to fish illegally? It makes zero sense to me.
