so my wife got her naturalization letter in the mail today for the date she is supposed to take the test. unfortunately since this letter took 7 months to arrive, we have already planned and paid for a month long trip out of the country to visit her family abroad....i believe we just have to send a letter asking for a new date, correct? we were waiting all summer....:/

yes, you send in the letter (I would do it with registered post). It could delay for several months if you ask for re-schedule.

yes, i mean we are not in a rush to get this done, but we waited all summer for this to come in the mail. if they do reschedule, i read of "serious complications"....what does that mean? besides being delayed, which i understand, what else could happen? she is already a permanent resident and her residency doesn't expire for i believe 8 more years....

Based on what I've read, rescheduling usually results in a 1to 3 month delay, but it can also cause serious complications.

You can read some cases I compiled here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/472784-examples-of-postponingrescheduling-interviews/?p=6727804

They won't tell you anything about the interview at biometrics.

Personally, I would not delay the interview or oath ceremony for anything other than an emergency.

This was posted a while back...

Thinks tend to go quiet here over the weekend :)

If you read the cases at the links, almost all of them only had a delay and otherwise it went smooth. The one that had serious issues was the one that either didn't postpone through proper channels, or USCIS didn't get the request for a new date. That is why I suggested sending the paperwork back registered post.

Yes, basically sending the letter with tracking.

You should still be able to check online; keep in mind that the online status updates are sometimes delayed or not updated at all. I'd make sure to have someone you trust at home to open any mail coming from USCIS in case they send a reply/ another invite.

thats the thing...the only people that can check our mail are our grandparents, and they don't read or speak english...my wife travels first, then i follow two weeks later because of my work...i guess hopefully it comes before i leave. also, i send the request for a reschedule to the address at the botton of the letter right? its an address not located in our local city (nyc), its a PO box in missouri...
