Hello,

My wife and daughter received their visas on Nov. 1 and we arrived in Seattle this week. Hooray.

I have to admit that now I have no idea what requirements/processes/forms/etc we should be doing to make sure we are in full compliance and getting ready for adjustment on status.

The officer at airport immigration said green card should be mailed in 3-6 months.

He said something about SS #'s, but I was too exhausted to get most of it. Something about we could apply at the SS office to get them sooner.

This is a totally noob question. I would be happy with a link for new immigrants that would point me in the right direction.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any help you might offer.

(My apologies if I've posted in the incorrect forum.)

IR-1 and IR-2

Thank you.

People on IR1 or IR2 visas are permanent residents upon admission and don't adjust status since they already are. What you guys need to do is wait for social security cards to arrive within a week or so if not go to the office in person and apply for one if not automatically sent. Upon endorsement by CBP officer, the immigrant visas now act as proof of permanent residency for 1 year for any purpose such as work or travel. The actual resident cards should take 3 to 6 months to arrive. Hope you guys payed the immigrant fee already for that. You guys are good to go. Edited by Starkilla09

Thank you for your informative reply!

We did pay the immigrant fees already.

I'm sure the officer said the SS cards would take longer than a week, or I would have immediately concluded to myself, "I don't have to do anything about SS cards." But we're pretty busy now trying to get the kids enrolled in school, so I'll wait and see if they come before paying the SS office a visit.

It seems kinda funny that after all the paperwork we went through before, there wouldn't be some kind of "Welcome to the United States of America" packet with basic info for the new immigrants.

Anyway, thanks again.
