I wonder how many here own iPhones?

Awesome

Take on Iphone mfg and ditch Boeing Planes

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.

I don't want to minimize it because I think the market is reacting impressively, however I will just say that it is reasonable to add the caveat that a true test will be once he is actually President, or maybe a year or two in. Right now whatever the markets are doing are based purely on "speculation" since he isn't actually President and nothing has changed.

Also, while I for one don't care much about Apple producing iPhones in the US (I use Android), any iPhone user should think hard on that considering the odds of the price staying what it is now is very slim. They are already crazy expensive without a plan, and it would be difficult to make them in the US without increasing the price (or hurting Apple's bottomline, which like any other company they would probably want ot avoid).

Also I think i've mentioned this in other threads but at least for me the thing I am least worried about with a Trump Presidency is the economy. If his campaign was purely about the economy and nothing more there would have been a decent chance I would have voted for him. He has a decent shot at making some positive changes on that front.

I only mentioned Apple because of how some here react to Trump having business overseas. I mean, the majority of what we buy today is either imported from cheap foreign labor countries, or a direct result of manufacturing there via US companies. Ford builds American trucks. With Mexican-built engines and transmissions. Very few companies can be said to be 100% American today it seems.

And people want to attack Trump because he is such a lousy business person. I mean, my goodness, he filed for bankruptcy several times! Anyone familiar with the Ford Motor Company knows ole Henry did twice before getting it right. Competition was tough, and he was almost shut out. Thankfully, he wasn't.

A quick search will yield THOUSANDS of people who filed for bankruptcy. Sometimes, it just makes good sines sense. Walt Disney, P.T. Barnum, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, J.C. Penney, Burt Reynolds, MC Hammer just to name a few.

Completely agree. Bankruptcy is not something that should be seen as a "negative" automatically. That's not fair to a lot of people that have to do it for a variety of reasons.

I think at a certain point the number of bankruptcies does matter though. Also when someone owns multiple companies I think it is a little "sketchy" to declare one company bankrupt separate from other business as a way to shift assets and help mitigate losses. I'm no business person but it just seems a little strange. Not illegal, and financially it seemed to make perfect sense and definitely helped him. Ethically though it is a little dubious (but still, not illegal).

Honestly though has anyone seen a good article or estimate about what an iphone would actually cost to produce in the US vs. China? Or in China if their "standard of living" for factory workers met our standard? I actually don't know how much more money it would be but I've always imagined a decent amount.

This is nice to hear. Common sense and an accurate view of reality is always a good thing. The price may increase, but on the flip side more people will have jobs.

I take back all the things I thought about you!

At this point people would likely purchase Apple products no matter the price, so they probably could survive it.

We still don't agree about most things, keep in mind :)

In my business I try to buy US product if available, They tend to be a more expensive but the quality is better than the China imported stuff. I think most Americans won't have an issue paying more for US products.

My fear is I don't know how much the Trump administration understands about international trade. Say tariffs are applied to imports from China. This is great on the surface. American companies will have a greater incentive to manufacture goods in the U.S. because 1. 'Made in the USA' looks a whole lot better than 'Made in China', and 2. Tariffs would minimize any profits of outsourcing in the first place.

What I haven't seen the Trump crew address is what happens when India, China and Mexico decide to ditch Boeing in favor of Airbus, and 1 billion Chinese decide to buy Huawei and Samsung instead of Apple because a 35% import tariff on iPhones isn't worth it.

This article quotes researchers who have estimated up to 100 dollars more if as much was done in the US as possible.

Ya it's a two-way street that has to be balanced. We can't just focus on "American made for American markets". There are other very significant markets out there. China is huge and we don't want to limit our product's reach in that market. God I wouldn't want to be in charge of any of this.

I always find it strange when people complain that [product] was made in China. But when you ask if they're willing to pay double for an American-made product, the deafening sound of crickets ensue.

Especially when you consider that often times, the price is more than double. I remember going with a friend of mine to buy a Yankees jersey in Korea. He picked it up for $25. Then showed it to me online for about $250. Exactly the same thing.
