greencard SSC and stuff

Once my spouse receives his visa packet from embassy and comes to the usa can he apply immediately for jobs or does he have to wait for SS# or GC to apply for jobs? We would be both travelling from his home country with our child with limited money.

Also can I the USC apply for Foodstamps/medicaid/WIC/childcare assist for myself and our USC child until we can get stable. I have a co Sponsor for my spouse since I am abroad with him. I do not want applying for benefits to effect our Co Sponsor

is he coming as a k1? if so he has a 90day window from enetring the country to apply for an SSN... he CANNOT work until you file for the EAD along with the AOS application... once the EAD (work permit) is approved he can then get a job.. it is illegal to work without a ssn AND the ead you need both to legally work.. a ssn is useless without the EAD until he becomes a permanent resident

if he coming as a CR1 then I believe he just needs to SSN

If you guys are already married your spouse will arrive on a CR1 or IR1 visa depending on the length of your marriage (under 2 years or not). Either way they're both immigrant visas and when endorsed by CBP upon admission, act as proof of permanent residency for 1 year for both work and travel until the actual cards arrive a few months later. Social security cards should also arrive within 2 weeks if not have spouse apply for 1 in person at SSA. The SS card and immigrant visa can be used for work.
