Japan PM: 'I have great confidence in Trump'

Media captionSpeaking through a translator Mr Abe said "I am convinced that Mr Trump is a leader in whom I can have great confidence"

Japan's PM Shinzo Abe has said he has "great confidence" in US President-elect Donald Trump and he believes they can build a relationship of trust.

Mr Abe described the 90-minute meeting in Trump Tower, New York, as "candid", with a "warm atmosphere".

Some of Mr Trump's campaign rhetoric cast doubt over long-standing US alliances, including with Japan.

The meeting was Mr Trump's first face-to-face with a world leader since winning the presidential election.

The US and Japan have been key allies since the end of World War Two, when the US helped Japan rebuild its economy.

The president-elect has vowed to scrap the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, that Mr Abe strenuously supports as a means of countering China's growing economic strength.

The deal was approved by the Japanese parliament, despite the likelihood that the deal will be cancelled when Mr Trump takes office.

Mr Trump has also said Japan needs to pay more to maintain US troops on its soil, and has floated the idea that Japan and South Korea should develop their own nuclear weapons to counter the threat from North Korean missiles.

The meeting was reportedly arranged when Mr Abe rang the president-elect to congratulate him, mentioning that he would be passing through New York on the way to an Asia-Pacific trade summit in Peru.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Abe said: "We were able to have a very candid talk over a substantial amount of time. We held it in a very warm atmosphere.

"I do believe that without confidence between the two nations the alliance would never function in the future and as the outcome of today's discussion I am convinced Mr Trump is a leader in whom I can have great confidence in."

In other words: everyone is kissing up to Trump because all these nations depend on the US for something or other more or less. Politics as usual. Yawn. Give it time, Merkel and Co. will come out of the woodwork asking for favors as well.

They also feel like the US is going to take on it normal roles as a leader in the world, and get away from Obamas policy of acting sheepish and scared. Trump is perceived as a strong leader to the rest of the world

Facebook news facts again? Look, everyone hopes the crazy, xenophobic, racist who discussed his wee wee during a nationally televised debate is going to settle in and actually get to something that at least resembles Presidential. But the word you are looking for isnt strong, it's unpredictable and more than a little bit crazy if you are trying to describe the general opinion of Trump by world leaders.

I know, you won! Shout like the Trump bots the night of the election. Snowflake!

I am not a facebook person. That is heavy snowflakes

You spouting out is Trump is a bit crazy/unpredictable is what I heard Dumbo and Crooked Hillary spouting of with their lying mouths. The facts are Trump is going to play things close to the vest and not telegraph his plans and actions. He already has the whole world standing at attention waiting for his next move. And that is how it should be.

Hopefully we all have good luck with that. Seriously.

But the idea other world leaders think Donald Trump is strong is all in the minds of his worshippers (likely a relatively small number of people who actually voted for him but no idea what percentage they might actually be,) and Right Wing media, fake media and the Trump bots which infested social media such as Facebook and Twitter during the race.

The whole world is waiting to see what he will actually do. I will give you that.
