Confused about importing vehicle... help!

I've read several threads about people importing their vehicles from Canada... but I just want some simple information.

What specifically are the steps for importing the vehicle? Does it have to be done at POE or does it vary by state?

I will be importing my 2011 dodge nitro. It's paid off/no lien. I have no concerns with my car meeting US safety requirements since that is something I checked several months ago by calling a US customs office in Nashville and they were able to tell by my VIN # over the phone. I'm also pretty sure they said I could just go to their office, pick up a form if I didn't do it at POE.

Can anyone confirm any of this? I would like my border crossing to be as swift as possible and would prefer to register/import the vehicle once I'm settled in Nashville. My insurance company has verified that I am covered up to 3 months once I move out of province.

Is there any information about Tennessee specifically that I should be aware of?

It has to be does at a CBP location which is easiest at POE.
