Flying USA-Tokyo-Manila, airport security for checked luggage

Greetings, VJ friends!

In a few weeks, I'll be visiting my fiancee in the Philippines (yay!). :dancing: I'll be traveling from the USA to Tokyo to Manila.

So, here's my question. I'll be checking a suitcase in the USA. I know when I go through Tokyo I'll have to go through a security scan of my carry-on bag again. But do I also have to retrieve my checked suitcase and run that through security/customs? Or does it just go straight on through to Manila and I pick it up at baggage claim in Manila?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Joel

Short answer...generally you will just fly straight to Manila.

Long answer...If your layover is more than a set number of hours (it varies, but usually 8-12ish), or if you are flying to different airlines and they do not have an agreement on baggage, you *may* have to recheck your bags, but in most cases you will fly straight on to Manila via Tokyo, since Japan allows transits. The answer might be different if you were flying through, say Shanghai in China. However, for Tokyo (assuming Narita), you should be fine, as Japan has no issue with transits. So it would just be up to airline baggage arrangements.

Who are you flying with?

I agree

I got caught in the China Beijing having to recheck luggage one time, I no longer travel to any part of China on my flights to Manila

Unless your flight is the next day and have to stay at a hotel outside the airport... they won't check anything, they'll send it on through

Wow! Thanks for the quick responses, everyone!

Mark, both flights will be on Delta and the stop in Tokyo is 2 hours.

after you get off in Japan and make your way to the next gate , they do have their own security check point in which you'll have to remove your shoes, but they don't have the body scanners like we have here, at least that was the last last time I was there in January.

Chinook and I regularly fly Delta to Manila through Narita. You won't have to touch your checked bags until you get to Manila.

Have a great trip...!

I have really enjoyed the Delta flight, we have gotten excellent deals but we fly at off peak times. I would love to fly a Philippines Airline company but it appears as if they don't go to USA. I see PAL only goes to couple cities on the west coast and CebuPac don't go to the USA.
