conditional green card and wants to travel

When you applied for your ROC (Removal of Conditions) which is the I-751 your wife should have got a letter saying that the service center received the application. This letter also says that it serves as the extension for travel and work for 1 year. I went on a cruise last year with the extension letter and was fine. As long as you have the extension letter with the expired green card your wife will be fine.

her green card expires in December she wants to travel in January should i wait for a letter or apply for I551

I traveled in October with the letter and it was all very well.

The only thing you should have is a copy with it to make it faster

As others have said (assuming you've applied for ROC) all you need is your expired GC and the NOA1 which specifically states your GC is extended for one year.

When I booked my flight and was asked for my GC details as part of the APIS data I put the new expiry date in (putting the expired date did not work). When I was returning from the UK I had to show both GC and NOA1 to the check in desk. I had to point out the first line saying it was extended.

Coming back through the airport in the US I had to use the normal immigration desk rather than the automated system but apart from that it was easy.
