Do you need to file for a SS before getting married?

I entered the United States on a K-1 Visa one week ago. The guide for K1 and adjustment of status recommend getting your Social Security number before you get married. Is this absolutely necessary? Or can I apply for my Social Security after I have gotten married? We have an apt to get married this Thursday, but as far as I can tell, I cannot apply for my social until about 2 weeks after I have arrived.

Thank you!

1.) Yes, best to get your SS# sooner rather than later. You can go back and change name after you get married.

2.) You don't need to wait 2 weeks, you were entered into system at POE. You should be able to print out a copy of your I-94 online and bring that and your passport to SS office to get apply for card. Also, bring this with you because some at SS office don't know their own procedures for issuing SS # to K1 visa holders: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530
