Hi guys

Hope you're all well. I just wondered if any of you had taken up any studying since your move to the US?

If so, how easy was the process, were you allowed a loan/grant and is there any online alternatives? (I have a baby so an online course would suit me most)

I'm keen to try and get my masters degree in the next few years... hopefully in Psychology/Psychotherapy/Counselling or along those lines... Although my bachelors degree is in law. Is this doable though or will I need to go back and do a bachelors in Psychology or something?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'm in Dallas, Texas

Thanks

The best thing to do is look up the institute you're looking to study at. You can then talk to an admissions person about whether the undergrad degree you already have is sufficient for entry to the masters. Individual institutions also have their own advice on loans / grants / funding etc. and will be able to help you through that. It's not done centrally like it was in the UK (no UCAS, no Student Loans Company).

I'm guessing you already know that US education is a lot more expensive than the UK, so brace yourself. :) Courses are often cheaper for "in state" students.

I googled "Dallas university" and this came up, for example: http://www.utdallas.edu/tuition/

I actually did a couple courses last year, online, for a Uni back in the UK. But those were just for fun for me, rather than aiming to finish the MA, although I did earn credits.

If you want online, you could look at MOOCs (free to study, pay if you actually want the credits):

To practice as a psychologist in the US requires certifications and licensure and doing a course certified by the APA. You can usually get into a Masters course with most undergraduate degrees since most programs will require the GRE general exam and the GRE psychology subject test. Best to look at the admissions requirements for the schools in your area. A lot of schools won't give scholarships, funding or financial aid unless you have lived in the state for a certain amount of time.

I have a masters degree in Psychology from the UK and not many credits can be transferred. I will have to do a PhD in psychology or another Masters here if I want to work as a psychologist here.
