Hi.

Some background: I'm a US citizen filing for my wife through DCF in London. I have never lived in the US (am Canadian/US) and am now back-filing on my taxes. Until this year my wife and I have both been students and haven't had any income. My dad is our joint sponsor who will be providing essentially all income as I've never had any. I have some questions regarding US Taxes, specifically # 18.a.-10 on the I-864 form!

Question 1: I have so far only filed taxes for the 2015 tax year. I filed using Turbo-tax and printed that page off as my proof filing/income tax return. I filed this a month or so late, and the IRS still says "processing". Do I need to wait for this to be processed (the income was $0. nothing is owed either way) before I submit my I-864?

Question 2: I haven't back filed for 2014 or 2013. I had no income for those years and it says

"If you were not required to file a Federal income tax return under U.S. tax law because your income was too low, attach a typed or printed explanation"

- where would I be able to find this explanation or proof of no income?

Question 2.1: IF I do indeed need to back file for 2014 and 2013 the instructions say:

"If you were required to file a Federal income tax return during any of the previous three tax years but did not do so, you must file all late returns with the IRS and attach an IRS-generated tax return transcript documenting your late filing before submitting Form I-864"

So if I file my 2014 and 2013 tax returns today, theoretically how long would it take to get this receipt? I can't just print off the turbo-tax proof like I am doing for 2015?

Since my income isn't going to be the one counted, anyway, does this really matter/will they look into it?

Question 3: My dad has (obviously) filed for all three years are checked off 18.a. as YES. However, for 19.a., 19.b., and 19.c., he only filed out 19.a. I know you aren't required to submit the photocopies of all three years unless you wish to, however do you still need to fill out the amounts of all three years? Or is 19.a. enough?

Thank you!

In terms of my question 2: I went to the IRS website and clicked through the interactive "do I need to file for x year" and did it for 2013 as an example. In the end it gives me this page (attached)

Would this qualify as proof that I didn't need to file?

How did that proof work out for you??

(same person, diff account)

It worked out fine! They barely took/looked at the proof as far as I remember. I wrote a statement that also included why I didn't file, but the attached screenshot is good!

Great. U think it'll matter much if I make more than the requirement to file  for married filed seperatly but not for head of household and do the screen shot showing I don't need to file bc I don't make enough for that? I made a mistake on reading my tax from abroad bc it's in Italian and didn't file taxes for 2016...
