That doesn't even sound legal to me. Sounds like workplace discrimination. How long have you been working there? Is this a new policy, not speaking Spanish?

As for your ability to speak multiple languages... Never let anyone put you down for that. Typically, those who try to do so are simply less capable or educated than you, and are intimidated.

Going on 6 months I'm the office manager. Boss said no Spanish if they try reply in English and I am not hiring anyone not able to read or write English for the factory.

Some of the workers English is terrible....they speak in Spanish to me because they know I understand. Anyway i'm fluent in both not a big deal but it kinda feels like I have to laugh when they all do about these jokes they make in the meetings.

ehhhh :sleepy:

IF anyone comes in take the app and hand it to me I know what to do with it.

Having been involved with/married to Mrs. T-B., and having made many trips across the Mexico border, I've come to realize that many Mexicans and Latinos are deeply insecure about their inability to speak English.

Mrs. T-B. taught me a great idea: If I encounter someone whose English abilities I don't know, I ask "Hablas Ingles?" If they say "no*," or "not much*," I immediately say "Yo tampoco!" (me, neither), and I continue in my awful, halting, basic Spanish. This takes the pressure off of them, and indeed most of them visibly relax. Most recently, one guy laughed out loud.

Mrs. T-B. makes the point that "Spanish people" can study English, but many or most will have no opportunity to practice (she didn't in Ecuador). Her friends in her English classes here were uniformly envious that she was married to a gringo, whereas they weren't.

Not sure that the above helps Anita in her appalling-sounding situation, but her story brought the above to mind.

*When they say "yes," or "a little," I brightly respond "Me, too!" and we continue in English.

In the Philippines, they say they are "nosebleed in English" (shy to speak to an American). I still feel insignificant because most of them speak 2-3 dialects at a minimum. My wife speaks English, Hangul, Japanese, Tagalog, and two other Pinay dialects, as well as a tad bit of Mandarin and a pretty fair amount of Spanish.

Meanwhile, I struggle with Engrish...

Good point, It always makes me smile after visting other countries that by the grace of God and my parents I was taught English. It truly is the international language.
