Topics are locked for a number of different reasons:

- the thread is very old and the question is no longer valid or relevant (or the answers given may no longer be the case). For example, if someone asked 6 years ago how much the fee is for the I-130 the answer would not be current now (as the fees have increased) so the topic is locked so that it will eventually disappear from the front page and to prevent people being confused with which threads are current and which are old

- the topic breaches the Ts and Cs of the website. For example if someone were to ask how to obtain a visa fraudulently, or how to lie to the officer convincingly, that sort of thing. It would be locked as discussion of illegal or fraudulent visas is not what we are here for.

- the person who started the topic can ask for it to be locked if he/she doesn't want the question to be discussed anymore. This often happens when the person has not received the answer they were hoping for and just want the topic to die. Or when people have received the answer they want but don't want anymore discussion about their (possibly very personal) situation.

- the person who started the thread has closed their account.

- the thread goes very off-topic or degenerates into arguments and personal attacks and no longer serves any purpose.

For my threads we close and move to the next month. That way we all are together.
