University Reactions to Trump Victory

I've been hearing a bit about this, however this is the first article I read that shows what many Univesities have done.

Dozens of students at Cornell University gathered on a major campus thoroughfare for a cry-in to mourn the results of the 2016 presidential election Wednesday, with school staff providing tissues and hot chocolate.

At Tufts University, arts and crafts were on offer. And the University of Kansas reminded students via social media of the therapy dogs available for comfort every other Wednesday.

Colleges nationwide scrambled to help students process Republican Donald Trumps stunning election victory. Theyre acknowledging that many students were up late watching results and so may not be at their sharpest in early-morning lectures. More so, theyre responding to a widespread sense of shock and despair on campuses to the victory of a candidate who offended Mexicans, Gold Star mothers, Muslims and the disabled during the course of the campaign.

The touchy-feely approach won some catty comments from skeptics, calling students snow-flakes for their inability to handle the result. But schools said the concerns were real for many students.

People are frustrated, people are just really sad and shocked, said Trey Boynton, the director of multi-ethnic student affairs at the University of Michigan. A lot of people are feeling like there has been a loss. We talked about grief today and about the loss of hope that this election would solidify the progress that was being made.

There was a steady flow of students entering Ms. Boyntons office Wednesday. They spent the day sprawled around the center, playing with Play-Doh and coloring in coloring books, as they sought comfort and distraction.

There is unspeakable shock at the manifestation of hate and bigotry that is on par with how people felt when Orlando happened, when Charleston happened, she said. This feels different from those events, but there is the same sort of heaviness today on campus today. Everyone is very quiet. It looks like grief.

There were also celebrations on campuses by supporters of Mr. Trump.

Ben Kaplan, head of Tufts Democrats, said that as some supporters of Hillary Clinton cried, portions of a campus center erupted in cheers as each state was called for Mr. Trump Tuesday night.

Alex Walker, son of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and chairman of the College Republicans of University of Wisconsin-Madison, which endorsed Mr. Trump, said that despite early shock, students seemed to have accepted the results and were getting back to their normal routines.

The school tweeted around midday that the multicultural student centers lounge was open all day for drop-ins, noting all are welcome.

Mr. Walker said concerns about Mr. Trumps heated rhetoric on immigration and other issues were overblown, adding that the president-elects acceptance speech had a very calm and unifying message.

Still, Alan Peel, an astronomy lecturer at the University of Maryland canceled a test scheduled for Wednesday morning, writing to students that he worried some of their performances may be affected by the monumental effort necessary to accept what must be a personally threatening election result.

I know exactly what you mean. I remember pulling all nighters many times studying for an exam, and I certainly wasn't at my sharpest, but I still managed a 3.8 in engineering. Do kids today even have to take exams, or do they just get a participation diploma?

These children are precisely why I have very little sympathy for the left. They spend the better part of half a decade calling people racists, bigots and [_____]ophobes, retreat to their safe spaces when opinions make them feel uncomfortable, and then when things don't go their way, they need feminist play-doh sessions and counseling.

I remember when Bush won in 2004. I was pissed off for a bit. And then I went to sleep.

Interesting follow-up. Since this happened local to me, it was in the local news and the student interviewed asked an appropriate question. If Trump had lost,would the University of Michigan offered all the same services to Trump supporting students that they are offering to the Hillary supporters? I think not.

Several hundred conservative University of Michigan students have signed an online petition claiming the university's top leadership, including President Mark Schlissel, is anti-Donald Trump.

The petition specifically cites Schlissel's comments at a large post-election vigil on Nov. 9. At that rally, Schlissel noted that the campus went overwhelmingly for Clinton. "Ninety percent of you rejected the kind of hate and the fractiousness and the longing for some sort of idealized version of a nonexistent yesterday," he told the crowd, according to a video of the event posted online by the Michigan Daily, the campus newspaper.

"Remember that we all have the same greater goal of making our country the very best it can be for everyone, we just have different opinions on the path to get there," one writer, who identified herself as a female U-M junior, said. "But it is not OK to hate people and call names because they voted differently, and it is not OK to condone it. If we continue to do so, it won't be Trump that brings the eventual demise of our country, it will be that kind of divisional mindset."

The petition comes as students at U-M and other campuses in Michigan and across the nation have been marching in protest of Trump being elected as president. Those students say they feel unsafe and threatened by Trump's comments about minorities and women.

Prominent conservative activist and U-M student Grant Strobl signed the petition, writing: "Im not even safe at my own home.

"Tonight I heard students yelling 'F*** you Grant Strobl' outside my apartment. This is among countless issues with students who are empowered by the liberal political machine of the university through their several statements. Shame on the university for picking a viewpoint and discouraging intellectual diversity."

He told the Free Press Monday that Schlissel at the university-sponsored candlelight vigil "marginalized conservative students that supported Trump by saying that they voted for hate."

"Professors are cancelling exams and classes and holding often one-sided discussions instead of teaching course material. None of this would have likely happened if Hillary had won," he said. I hope the administration realizes that different viewpoints exist and those different viewpoints should not be marginalized by recent university initiatives. The $85-million diversity plan is useless if the university cant even recognize intellectual diversity after election day.

We were driving up past the university here as we do almost daily, and usually by now it's alot colder and we already have our first inch of snow but this year we haven't had any yet...so I saw some kids coming down, and pointed and went "look, snowflakes"....took my wife a few seconds to stop looking for actual snowflakes and realize who I was referring to, but it was quite funny.
