the whitehouse has new immigration plan:

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/30/imm...n.ap/index.html

seems the $2,000 fine has been changed to $10,000

Hmmmm, after all they were and are breaking the law entering this country illegally. They should be subject to fines or deportation. Maybe by them paying fines we, (the USA), will get back some of our tax money that we have been spending supporting them while they have been here illegaly.

Wow, I think they forgot the whole point of the legislation in the first place.

So, the intent is to bring the 12 million illegal immigrants back into legal status. Thats not how you do it. Putting costs that high, gives zero incentive for any of the illegal immigrants to change their status, considering most of them work jobs that don't pay much more than minimum wage. Add in sending money back home, I highly doubt most of them would even have enough money to pay $3500 for a visa.

So if this idea becomes law, nothing will change. We will still have 12 million illegal immigrants. 12 million immigrants who wont be paying taxes. 12 million immigrants who will use services set aside for citizens and residents. We could change that, IF we give them a reason, and the means to become legal immigrants This plan is defiantly not it.

The cost is a little over $1000/year to participate in the guest worker program with legal status ($3,500 every 3 years and renewable)

For a green card, a $2000 penalty and an $8,000 processing fee along with a required return to the home country for processing, background checks, interview, etc.

1) It seems unlikely to ever pass this way

2) If it does, those who want legal status and to be guest workers but not greencard holders will simply pay the fee every three years. Not a horrible deal considering many have no other option i.e. marriage based visa and will now be able to come out of the shadows.

i agree with you whole heartedly with the illegals that are in the US, they should be fined heavily. my point was that this fine applies also to those who would need a waiver as in my wife's case for a 190 day overstay, which was the mistake of USCIS(they even admitted it was their mistake).

There is a city in the northern part of the Dallas area that has really taken a tough stand against all of the illegal immigrants. They've started fining landlords for renting to any illegal immigrants, made English the official language of the City, and allowing access to federal databases in which local law enforcement check residency status upon detainment for any crimes. and start the deportation process. Needless to say - there have been numerous protests, etc. Discrimination lawsuits have been filed against the city for it, and all sorts. They are now trying to pass an ordinance that bans illegals from renting in the within the city at all.

Our Visa Journey

7/31 - K1 - APPROVED

8/5 - POE @ Dallas/Ft. Worth

8/11 - Wedding!!

I thought Farmer's Branch already passed that particular tidbit?

I wholeheartedly support what Farmer's Branch is doing; it's about time someone started ENFORCING THE LAW!

They are fining the property holders - I think now they are going after the renters. It's up for vote in May. And yeah, they're not going to find much sympathy from any of us on here, I would imagine. After all, we're going about things the legal way... Amnesty, indeed. Hmph.

I just hope there's a big fat protest after we get back to Texas; there's just something about lawbreakers whining about their rights that makes me giggle.

My brother's wife's sister got a ticket during one of those big immigration protests; she's pretty right-wing and as my SIL drove her through downtown, she flipped the whiners the bird. A cop pulled her over and gave them both $500 tickets. Total B.S. if you ask me.

$500 fine for flipping the bird while illegal aliens make themselves publicly visible with impunity?

If I got that fine I'd be straight onto the press about it.

LOL...she's a journalist too. She writes for a daily paper in another state. I don't know why she didn't kick up a fuss to be honest. I would have.

Hardly. In my neighborhood, it was an opportunity for all the mostly legal Hispanic high school students to skip classes and tie up traffic in the middle of a work day.

Dallas has tons of illegals; I'll bet you that you could not have swung a dead cat around that protest without hitting one. If only the police had been checking IDs and credentials; we probably could have deported thousands of illegals in one fell swoop. Missed opportunities....

It's an expression. There were others that were appropriate but some people are so prickly they'd have taken offense at them, thinking that I was condoning hurting illegal immigrants. I don't condone that; I wish them no harm. I just want them to go home.
