ACA has helped some. It has hurt others. I know of people who are paying over $5,000 per year in premiums, and that have deductibles that range from $4-13,000 per year. Quite a disparity.

Hate to tell you, but they could repeal the ACA tomorrow and that part will still remain. They are called consumer driven health plans. Health insurance companies love them and they were trending that way long before the ACA. It's going to get worse whether the ACA remains or not.

That trend won't go away unless we get single payor or increased regulation of providers. I don't see either of those things coming soon.

Don't doubt you one bit. It has done nothing but get progressively more expensive over the years to insure a family. The sad part is that hospitals and doctors are willing to settle for about 10% of a bill usually, while an underinsured person may not know that and end up saddled with years of debt. It SHOULD be criminal.

Couldn't get, or simply had to pay more for coverage? I seem to recall that some things were coverable, but with really high premiums. Probably not late-stage cancer or anything. But I guess that's between the company and the insured to bargain for.

Pre existing exclusions used to vary by plan. General guidline - the more it would cost to treat, the more likely it would be an exclusion. There were time limits to exclusions, but some conditions are ongoing or won't get better without treatment.

They actually tried to pass legislation here so that an uninsured person who was unable to pay couldn't be charged more than the highest insured rate would reimburse. It went no where. IIRC, no support from the left or the right.

Well, which would you prefer? Your life or your money? "Sorry sir, we reviewed your health insurance policy, and that life threatening illnesses you just contracted is not covered under it, or you forgot to tick the correct box five years so sorry, we are not going to cover you. Have a nice day."

I received notice a few days before the election that my provider was dropping my previous ridiculously expensive ACA compliant plan and poor coverage entirely. They would like to move us onto the next tier for an amount so high I literally broke down and wept on my husband's shoulder for comfort. We cannot afford it anymore, so if nothing better comes along in two months we'll be paying the penalty I guess and going without. No doubt I suspect a lot of people got the same letters. I wonder if it was a deciding factor in whom they voted for.

Repealing the ACA will not solve the problem, especially if there is no plan to fix it. I have seen a lot of talk about HSA from republicans and from someone who has dealt with the insurance industry.. that is the biggest joke. You know, if republicans were actually serious about fixing healthcare, a lot more people might be willing to vote for them.

What I am gathering from this thread and conversations with friends and family is that the folks who are strongest voices against Obamacare:

1 Don't understand the majority of the law 2 Like many of the provisions of the law 3 would support a similar law if it had not been shoved down their throats by a President they don't respect.

Edited by Rob L

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.

I don't want a Healthcare system that costs more than any other 1st world nation and delivers at the bottom of the pile. Obamacare didn't fix it or make Healthcare affordable. I don't know the solution but I know the ACA ain't it

They have a lot of fixing to do try to upright the ship that Obama drove into the ground.

Healthcare, Immigration, Trade, Business Regulation, Military, Iran Deal, NAFTA, Police Violence, National Pride, Economy, etc

Somehow I don't think either of us believe that

First I heard that the Democratic congress was the issue

Then I heard that the new President, who was not really American or Christian was the problem

Now we have a Native Born Christian Republican Male President who loves America along with both houses of Congress. What is the excuse now?

Nope because unless you can predict the future there is nothing to make an excuse for

Very sorry to hear this is happening to you guys, Yuna. I know for some, the price is simply not in the budget. Paying the penalty and taking a chance on the need for care becomes the best option. Hard to believe there is not another option somewhere in the middle.

I'd like you to summarize for us (that don't understand the majority of the law) what those approximately 20,000 pages of ACA mean. In 15 pages or less, to make it easier to understand, if you please.

1 Don't understand the majority of the law 2 Like many of the provisions of the law 3 would support a similar law if it had not been shoved down their throats by a President they don't respect.
