I-864 Current Income for Sponsor returning from abroad

I am trying to figure out what to put for Current Income in Part 6, Question 2 of I-864. Here's my situation:

  • Until the end of September, I lived and worked abroad earning Canadian dollars. At my old job I made enough to meet poverty guidelines.
  • I returned to the US at the end of September and began a new job in the US. Between the end of September and now (early November) I've earned more than enough to meet the full annual requirement.

I'm trying to figure out what to report for my current income. I see 3 possible answers:

  1. My actual total projected income for this year including both my job in Canada and my job in the US. This is the number that will go to my tax return for 2016.
  2. Only the expected income from my US job from September through the end of this year. I can support this with pay stubs to date.
  3. My expected annual salary for next year from my US job. This is what my company letter will state as my salary.

All 3 of these options meet the poverty guidelines, I just don't know what the NVC would like. I could also meet the assets test or get co-sponsors, but I'd like to make it as straightforward as possible.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I would go with option #1!

This is the actual truth and will be the number you report on your tax return. If possible, try and get two letters, one from your current employer and one from your previous employer, stating how much total money they paid you during this calendar year. In your cover letter you can then explain, I held two jobs. At job #1 my yearly income salary was $XX (see letter), At job #2, my yearly income salary was $YY (see letter and attached paystubs). Together, I will be expected to earn $XXX this calendar year.

It's how much you should make in a year at your current job. Do not include old jobs, you don't work at them anymore.

If you could include old or foreign jobs, people would make the poverty guidelines while being unemployed!

Sadly, I've seen all 3 opinions expressed on here. As common as this is, you think there might be a definitive answer here. Will calling the NVC help?

Your current income is your gross earnings times the number of pay periods in twelve months, whether 12, 26, or 52.

If you lose this job tomorrow, your CURRENT income is $0, no matter how much you made already this year. If you get a new job tomorrow worth $50,000 in the next twelve months, your CURRENT income is $50,000.
