Given the current climate towards immigrants - legal or otherwise - or just towards non-white Americans, I think the smart money is on becoming a US citizen as soon as you possibly can.

I become eligible on 4th January 2018. You can bet your ### that my N-400 will be arriving on 5th January 2018.

Trump is uninformed and speaks without knowing the intricacies of what he is speaking about. His words and actions have already empowered hard right racists and xenophobes, and that's before he's even taken office. It's only going to get worse from here.

It's going to be a rocky four years (and hopefully that's all it will be). I would urge anyone considering filing for citizenship to just do it, for their own protection if nothing else.

LPRs may not necessarily be protected from some of his more outlandish plans. Remember internment camps for people of Asian descent in the US during the second world war? 62% of those were US citizens.

Is anything like that planned, or even likely? No, but with Trump, really who can say definitively. As commander-in-chief, a US President has very wide latitude to take actions they deem to be necessary to defend the country. God only knows what his tiny brain and hands will come up with.

Buckle up. It's going to be a fun four years!

This summarizes it all! I know we're going to get some hard right wingers are going to try to say it can't happen blah blah.

It can and has happened before like you said. Many of the affected were US citizens of Asian descent and there was WIDESPREAD support of it in the US due to 'supposed' national security interests.

Many people don't understand the power of the US presidency. Screw laws and the constitution, the president has the power and the mandate by law to suspend the constitution or parts of it for national security purposes. George bush did that after 9/11 :

- He forced the hand of congress to suspend Habeas Corpus to all persons - citizen or not - 'deemed enemy combatants' within the US.

- He enacted the USA patriot act in 2001. An act that severely infringed and disregarded the rights of US citizens by giving sweeping powers to law enforcement agencies to conduct searches WITHOUT warrant, detain and DEPORT persons deemed as 'dangerous to the national security' without due process etc.

So yes, this could happen over and over again. All it takes is for a president to 'feel' like the national security is being compromised and they can pass executive actions to suspend rights of anyone on the land.

I know there will be folks coming up to disagree with the above. That is fine but I don't want arguments or disagreements without facts. It's pointless. If you disagree, state facts to back your claim.

You talk you teach, you listen you learn

You (and I) might have a bit of a wait as citizenship applications have been put on hold following vetting problems.

Perhaps "extreme vetting" will solve all our problems (ho-ho)

Well they've got a year to fix that before it becomes an issue for me.

And from some posts here in the main thread discussing that problem it seems people have started to get oath ceremony notices again, meaning it may already be resolved.

The 'vetting' you are speaking about, relates to ELIS, which apparently does not work, and the new N400 forms. NBC numbers are going ahead. Applications are not on hold, any with IOE numbers are having to do the checks again, as they did not function in the new system as they ought to have.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

don't we already have a massive thread about this subject and others?

We do. But we mustn't let a 'potential' crisis go to waste.

Here we go again...

OP, did you even take time to read the paper Trump released describing in detail his planned immigration reform?

I suggest you do it before you start spreading panic.

Legal immigrants are safe, chill. He only wants to deal with illegals which I fully support.

"Criminal illegals".. I think you repeated yourself. :P

Come on people, get informed and stop spreading chaos and disinformation. You're just adding to the problem and fuel to the fire.

Everyone on this site should be supportive of Trump and his immigration policy. He supports and favours legal immigration.

The illegals are the only ones who have anything to worry. Even illegals that are taking the legal route should be just fine.

Maybe some Muslim countries will get further screening.

I may have posted this before in this long thread, but . . .

President Trump and AG Sessions certainly can immediately or at any time they want, stop or suspend or anything you want to call it,

all immigration processing including new and currently in process.

And yes, my wife will be affected by this as she goes for 10 year green card next year.

Are we worried about it? Not too much, but we do think about it and talk about it from time to time.

But we certainly don't fool ourselves that President Trump couldn't do it, if he wanted to.
