If by "take the ball and go home for eight years" you mean get up the next day, and go to work, as we have always done, doing our best to support our families, work hard to get ahead, and not sit on our beds and cry about who was running the country now... Yes, that is exactly what we did. And what we're still doing today. And next election.

No by take the ball and go home, I mean elected representatives getting up every day, going to congress, and getting paid for doing nothing but sitting and obstructing the democratic process for 8 years. It's been a commonly used metaphor to describe the grid lock brought about by congressional Republicans so I thought you would know what I was referring to without the need for an explanation.

Opposite of Pro is Con.

Opposite of Progress it Congress. Been that way for the past 20 or so years that I can recall. Why would it be any different today?

Wait, Duval county in Florida went to Trump by a narrow margin and a few blue counties were left grey so I'm calling BS on that electoral map.

Are you saying that racists are not drawn like flies on rice to Trump ?

Can you at least ask yourself why and explore that a bit ?

Can you ask yourself why it has empowered closet racists ?

It seems to be a true narrative and not a false one.

I think the overall argument here is, yes, there is a certain portion of the electorate that voted for Trump because they genuinely are racist. I get that, and I agree.

But that's not how and why Trump won the White House. If the left keeps moaning about "racist bigots", "whitelash" and "whitesplaining", Trump will be president for 8 years, not 4.

Donald Trump improved the GOP's numbers among African Americans by 4% since 2012.

Donald Trump improved the GOP's numbers among Latino/HIspanics by 3% since 2012.

Donald Trump minimized the gender voting gap.

Trump, in fact won nearly 10% of the African American vote (up from 6% in 2012), nearly 30% of the Hispanic vote (up from 27% in 2012), and 45% of women voters (roughly the same as in 2012). That minimized his losses in states that Mitt Romney won.

In addition to that, he won states that haven't voted Republican since the 80s. He won Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. He won these states by winning over counties that voted for Obama twice, and overwhelmingly went to Sanders in the primary. You don't win rural Michigan because you propose building a wall on the southern border. Here's an overly simplistic version of why Trump won a state like Michigan (or Ohio, or Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin):

When Ford outsourced its auto manufacturing plant to Mexico, Donald Trump responded by proposing a 35% import tax on cars from Mexico.

The left responded by calling the low wage, largely white industrial workers who worked in these facilities "racists" and "misogynists" who can't complain due to their "white privilege."

Will Trump fix the stagnation and decline in Rustbelt economies? Maybe, maybe not. But that really is besides the point here.

Time will tell if that trend remains. Obama did find a way to energize the young and the minority vote all around. Obviously some of that because he was a young, minority candidate. I don't think it's surprising to see those numbers slip back some now that he's leaving, but what will be more telling is what both parties do down the road. I would be surprised if either party wants to use too much from his election as the model for the next.

As someone who was energized by the Obama campaign, I would agree. Obama also has a way of relating to young and minority voters that we've never seen before. I agree with maybe 40% of Obama's policies. I still can't help but love the guy when he speaks.

The point is, Trump's margin among both Latino and black voters were fairly common for a GOP candidate. He won the same amount of black voters as Bush did, and slightly less than Dubya among Latinos.

Progressives tend to have this generalized, stereotypical view of Latinos as a marginalized monolithic group of people who are all related to someone here illegally undocumented. They are Jorge Ramos-viewing, Spanish speaking, poor immigrants whose main concern is getting immigration reform passed. I personally know at least a small handful of Latinos who voted for Trump, some for the same reasons anyone else would, some for the sheer sake of giving a middle finger to a "progressive elite" deadset on grouping them into what progressives want brown people to be.

Of course, wanting and expecting brown people to think according to the prerequisites of their skin color is ok, lest they be 'race traitors' (Stormfront much?).

This is what identity politics does.

Trump did beat Romney with Latino voters.

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.
