Hi,

As you see according to my timeline, I am "not quite" :) to this stage yet, but am curious about this. I am the USC, and my fiance is Russian. I want to take his name when we get married, but I want to have it with a Russian feminine ending. -na. Does anyone know if I need to go to court with this? Or will they be able to list it this way on the marriage certificate? Also does anyone about the rules of this for California? Maybe this is too complicated a question :) But any advice would be appreciated...THANKS!Milena.

I don't know exactly, but it may be hard to do. Since English is a gender-neutral language with no concept of a "feminine" name whatsoever, I'm afraid it may need to be taken to court.

It would suck to be called something like "Elena Ivanov"

Milenka,

do not worry. After the marriage, you can go to court and ask the judge for the court order, where your last name, the way you want, will be stated. I did that, though for a different reason. But it should be no problem.

Or may be, you can ask that your marriade certificate will specify that you take the name of your spouse, and you will be known as let's say Milena Ivanova.

Good luck!

Thanks guys! When we get the certificate I will ask...and if not will just go to court with it :)

It would really suck to be known as Milena Ivanov :)

You need to check what occurs in your state... In MN, either party in the marriage can change there name to anything they want (first, middle, last).

Example:

Before Marriage:

Man: John Robert Smith

Woman: Michelle Adelle Johnson

After Marriage"

Man: Rowdy Roddy Piper

Woman: Zachnovia Panda Bear

YMMV

Wow, that's unbelievable!

Milenka, thanks for starting this thread. I also have been pondering the same question...and have held off getting my named changed because I have too much on my plate to petition the court right now. Hopefully you have the same situation in CA that fwaguy mentionned about MN...I know in VA I will have to go to court.
