Remember as a green card holder you can vote in state and local elections, just not in US elections. That is likely why you are registered to vote.

This is 100% wrong, and I'll tell you to remember to NEVER answer a question here when you do not know the answer. It is dangerous to give out wrong information on an immigration site. It could potentially cost a person who is ignorant of our laws their immigration and/or citizenship status. As an LPR you cannot vote in ANY US elections at any level. PERIOD.

It is ONE of the few rights USC still hold...the right to Vote is only for a USC.

AS we can no longer say or do many things to not offend other cultures.

As for USC not knowing an LPR cant vote, they probably do know this. But I run across at least 1 person per week who thinks I'm a USC because I'm married to one. Nope!

I don't think my husband would have known... it really is down to the immigrant to protect themselves from mistakes like this. Another example would be young men not knowing to sign up for selective service.

I don't want to say that a lot of people coming in don't bother learning anything, but there have been a few people on VJ who have referred to their GC as their Conditional Visa, and those who think their 2 year GC means they're citizen and they're done with Immigration, so I wouldn't put it past some people to think that if they live in a country, they can vote in said country.

You can in NZ. As a permanent resident you are expected to be on the electoral roll, in fact you have to be. And you can vote.

Apparently a few countries still allow foreigners vote in municipal elections. Also, historically (mostly early early times of the union till to the end of 19th century) some states also allowed foreigners to vote but when you think about those years people came here with the intention of living in US till they die.

I am sure that some GC holders register to vote, vote, then apply for citizenship and it slips through the cracks because we have all seen how badly the different agencies actually communicate with each other. I'm sure it happens more than we like to think.

OP- I am not suggesting you lie on the n400 application, but for discussion's sake, you already declared that you are a US Citizen by registering to vote, so you have already committed that offense... if you applied for citizenship and they didn't notice it during the process, you might slip through and be successful? ...

Cheezees - I don't in any way think the OP should be granted a concession, as it is made very clear (as long as you read and take notice of your surroundings and take the time to educate yourself!) that as a non citizen you are not to vote or register to vote, but sadly things go unnoticed or exceptions are made all the time.
