Correct me if Im wrong. Green card is about 30-90 days I think. Maybe depends on which category you are. A family member recently migrated to the US and it took over 2 months for her GC to arrive.

SSN about a week of 2.

When I came here I used my passport with my marriage certificate because I used my married name to apply for bank accounts and stuff.

Hope these helps.

any recommendation on the best bank to open for new immigrants?

I mean what bank can issue an early credit card? I am planning to deposit 3-4k dollars. Thanks

Why don't you get a credit card now in Philippines.

Credit score is not really that important if you pay cash for what you buy

If you want a to have credit history you better get a prepaid credit card and get a cell phone contract and try to build it up.

Personally I find credit to be highly overrated in USA

You can get a prepaid card and build your credit until your bank issues you an unsecured card. Or, you can get a joint card with your hubby. My Pinay wife and I opened a joint bank account at Wells Fargo bank and she received an unsecured visa card.

Building up good credit is not overrated, especially if you ever buy a home or a car and need to borrow money to so. Also, many landlords check their potential tenant's credit rating.

I don't know why it is overrated for you and how it is not that important to you. Because all of the people I know who are in the US for more than a decade says that credit score is one of the very important and other even considered it as necessity especially if you will buy a house, car, loan for education and etc.

Thank you for the response. Can I use my good credit standing with my bank in the philippines to get an unsecured card right away? I am 26 and still single. my gf is in the Philippines finishing her studies in medicine.

It depends on the institution you apply to. Some are easier to get credit others not. Capital One will usually give you a credit card with a 500 spending limit and if you pay on time and not go over the limit during your first six months they will increase your credit line to $750 and a few months to $1000 and so on and so forth as longer if you pay on time.
