I am also wondering, when you petition for your spouse as a LPR then is there an option to file for his/her work permit while waiting for a visa number to be available ? And if there is, how long does it take to get the work permit ?

You wife has to leave when her authorized stay is up. There is no way for you two to be together here in the US. You could apply for a re entry permit and move to her country to wait

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
