I think as someone said here a while back, that once the parents/friends meet and get to know him, they'll lighten up. My mom actually mentioned that she was *thinking* of getting a book that shows similarities between Muslims and Christians and Jews. Not sure what the book is called and I don't talk to her much anymore and when I do I steer clear of that discussion.

For my next trip there though I am TOTALLY not even mentioning the fact that I'm going. I've gone more than a week without chit chatting with her so hopefully she won't notice I'm gone. (we live in the same town)

I am just so thankful to have been introduced to this site and hear all of your experiences it really helps alot...it has actually eased up alot since I came back from my month's stay in Jordan. Guess they realized that I came back safe and sound so what else could they say. My mom has been supportive the entire time as long as he treats me well--but, just as long as he is good to me and my little girl...it doesn't matter to me what anyone thinks!

Thanks for the laughs, I enjoyed this thread :)

Stereotyping is not confined to Muslims only. I married a Jamaican and, oh the stories I could tell................Ignorant people are everywhere. As long as you love them and are secure in your relationships........ nationalities, religions, colors, whatever, do not matter.

What a beautiful couple you two make!

Okay, what about the "you will get your head cut off if you go there". Funny thing, I have been there 4 times now and my head is still attached to the same place it was before. (Is that a good thing?)

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

This is what I got from a family member, they researched Morocco and said that they sale children for sex slaves and also females.

This basically was the biggest I heard from someone, and it upset me so much. That the person went so far to try to take my daughter from me.

This person didnt want to hear that we in the US have sex slave and much worst than what would ever happen in Morocco.

OK would any MENA men or women here like to share their side? Stereotypes about marrying Americans.

A couple of the responses made me curious. After all, it works both ways. It would be ethnocentric to think otherwise!

BT

If I cause offense it is not on purpose, think about that before you take offense. If you feel offended, consider that maybe I'm not talking about you and maybe I accidentally stumbled onto a sore area and do not know. Thank you.

The superstition that I've heard is that elephants in the home are good luck, but only if their *trunk* is facing the door.

same here except- trunks facing east.

A lot of men view woman as being sluts

All american woman are mouthy

Everyone in the U.S is rich

People in the U.S treat muslims badly

No one cares about the family

Life in the U.S is easy (and it is not)

That's pretty much what my husband thought too. I'll ask him for more tonight but here's a lil insight:

He asked me if I will let my daughters date when they are older. (mind you he's talking about my daughters frm a previous marriage...not any daughter HE would have with me). I said yes of course and he said, "ok but I donnot want them to have sex in our house".

I informed him that dating does NOT = having sex and that if I EVER thought that they did that under my roof they'd be in BIG trouble.

He seriously thinks that women here sleep with each man they date!!

I think I can top all of these.

They will kidnap you and sell you as a sex slave!!

By the way, I am 56 years old, so I told them they would probably be looking for younger women for that!! Debbie

Oh yeah! My hubby thinks the same thing! For the longest time after we first met he was always asking me how many men I had dated since my divorce. Every time I told him "5" he would say something in arabic and then say "ok, no problem." It took about a month before he finally got around to asking me about the personal things about the dates! Silly man! He has also asked me how old my daughter will be "if" I decide to let her date.
